Roberts, a multi-talented receiver/kick returner, was a standout at the Nike Camp in Gainesville. Ditto for the Florida State camp. The determined Roberts has carried that momentum into his high school season at Tallahassee Godby.
Roberts turned in an electric performance Friday night with 11 receptions for 179 yards and four touchdowns in the Cougars' 47-41 triple-overtime defeat to Chiles High School. Roberts also had a 76-yard touchdown reception nullified due to holding late in the fourth quarter.
In a dramatic, exhausting marathon at Cox Stadium, the Timberwolves barely held on. Godby rallied for 14 fourth-quarter points, including Roberts' 3-yard score with less than a minute remaining, to push the game into overtime.
Roberts also had a 12-yard TD pass in the first overtime to go with earlier scores of 46 yards -- on the game's first play -- and 9 yards.
The shifty Roberts, a 5-9, 175-pounder, creates well in spaces and is noted for his quickness and accleration. It's easy to see why teams such as Nebraska, Iowa, North Carolina and Central Florida, Toledo and Syracuse have offered the athletic wideout.
"We don't have a quarterback with a big arm, so most of my passes are short, make-defenders-miss routes," Roberts said Saturday.
"I try to rely on my quickness and speed. I also try to be patient and wait for my blockers."
Also a track standout with 4.34 speed in the 40, Roberts scored a 16 on his recent ACT test and has a 2.8 grade-point average. While Roberts would love to receive an offer from the Seminoles -- "My family grew up Florida State fans," he said. -- he also has plenty of options.
Still, Roberts is taking a patient approach.
"Really, I am just waiting to see how it goes right now," Roberts said.
"For the past couple of years I sat back and watched some of the older guys go through this (recruiting) and I just told myself when my time came I was going to enjoy it."
Football fans certainly enjoyed Roberts' performance Friday. He was also extremely gracious in defeat, crediting Chiles for making the plays when needed. ##
