Barron named AP All-American

Former Florida State offensive lineman Brett Williams wasn't surprised to hear Monday's news -- Alex Barron has continued the legacy of FSU linemen earning all-star status. Barron, a junior tackle from Orangeburg, S.C., was selected on the Associated Press first-team All-American squad.

Barron was earlier named to the Football Writers Association of America team. Last year, tackle Brett Williams was a consensus first-team All-American and is now a No. 2 tackle with the Kansas City Chiefs. Guard Montrae Holland, a free agent signee who played Sunday for the New Orleans Saints, was a third-team All-American last season.

"I knew once Alex got in there, the accolades would start coming,"Williams told TheTerritory Monday. "Alex has all the ability in the world. Great size. Great quickness. I really expected that out of him."

Jason Whitaker (1999), who resides in Tallahasse and is the head football coach at Munroe High School in nearby Mt. Pleasant, Tra Thomas (1997) and Kevin Long (1997) were recent FSU linemen on All-American squads.

Barron missed Monday's practice due to a death in his family, but is expected to return Tuesday. Also missing practice was backup center John Frady, who is still recovering from pneumonia, but is expected to be practicing during bowl week preparations in Miami.
