Focus 2005

Florida State targeted size and athleticism when it inked its 2004 recruiting class earlier this month. The Seminoles landed five highly-regarded linemen, including tackles Courtney Abbott and Geoff Bernaird. Of course, it's never too early to plan for 2005, and that's what FSU is doing. Tackle Eugene Monroe has been targeted by a number of programs, including the Seminoles.

OT Eugene Monroe of Plainfield (N.J.) already has 18 scholarship offers and is already being touted as the top prospect in New Jersey and one of the best linemen in the country.

"I'm a real good pass blocker and I can dominate on run blocking as well. I can block in the open field too. I set my feet good and can work my hands well," said Monroe.

"But I want to controld defenders more easily and improve my hand quickness and placement. I also want to improve my agility and movement."

Eugene favors Miami slightly over Michigan St, Syracuse, Florida St and Tennessee. All have offered him.

His first offer was from hometown fave Rutgers (only 20 mins away-not a factor) back in Sept and he's already been to the Scarlet Knights Jr Day. He plans to attend the Maryland Jr Day this weekend (2/28).

"A guy from my school [OL Eddie Wilkins] played there and he loved the program. He was part of the last national championship team they had. The OL coach (Art Kehoe) is supposed to be real good and I hope to talk to him soon."

Eugene says that the Spartans are recruiting him the hardest right now.

"I call the coach every other day and talk to them a lot because they are so far away it'll be difficult to get there. The coach recruiting me is also the OL coach [Jeff Stoutland] and it's a good idea to build a good relationship early.

"I want to go to a school that is known as a good academic program. I won't even look at a school that doesn't have good academics. I'll also be looking at the type of offense they have.

"I'll most definitely wait to commit. I don't know where I'm gonna go right now. I'm still looking at a lot of schools. I was never into college football as a kid, so it's not like I have a favorite school. I have offers from schools all over the country. I also have offers from Boston College, Virginia, Wisconsin, even USC."
