"I saw some positive things out there," Andrews said following the workout.
"The first unit played well except for one series." On that series, cornerback Jermaine McAhroy was beaten deep by receiver Chauncey Stovall on a long-gainer to the one-foot line. Lorenzo Booker punched it in for the offense on fourth down three plays later.
Other than that, the defense was dominant. Andrews' unit forced six three-and-outs behind the stellar play of the linebacking corps. A.J. Nicholson and Ernie Sims made several athletic plays on ballcarriers, each tallying two tackles in the backfield. Six different defenders had sacks.
But Andrews knows one play can make a difference.
"The last three times down in Miami, one touchdown has been too much," he said. "There have been situations where one more play could have done it."
Florida State opens its season against the Hurricanes Sept. 6 on Monday Night Football.
With seven practice sessions down and eight to go, the longtime assistant has one primary objective for his players – get better. Among his laundry list of suggestions:
"More consistent secondary play. Better tackling by the safeties. Less missed assignments. Get tougher."
In goal line drills, the defense was tough enough to keep the offense out of the end zone two out of four plays, an improvement from practices early in the week.
"We have to make sure that we double the progression that we have made out there so far this spring," Andrews said. "There is not one person I've seen that couldn't get better."
Backup signal-caller Wyatt Sexton was given extra reps – some with the first-team – Saturday and struggled. The Tallahassee native competed just three of his 11 attempts on the afternoon.
Head coach Bobby Bowden expressed some concern but remained optimistic.
"We are trying to get Wyatt as much experience as possible going into the season," he said. "Chris (Rix) has been through four springs and four regular seasons. Wyatt is still getting a feel for it."
