Wednesday Football Practice Update

The Florida State football team practiced 24 periods Wednesday afternoon in what Bobby Bowden termed the last "live" practice action until the Garnet and Gold game. The 'Noles will take the field Friday when the coaching staff holds its annual clinic for high school coaches.

Safety Roger Williams had a monster day, totaling four pass breakups in the mini-scrimmage at the end of practice. For the most part, Williams and the rest of the secondary kept the offense in check.

There were bright spots for the offense Wyatt Sexton hit Donnie Carter for a big gain on a seam route. A nice block from Lorne Sam on middle linebacker Buster Davis sprung Carter for an extra 20 yards.

Davis was shaken up on the play but returned a few snaps later and snared a Rix pass and then returned it for a big gain.

Xavier Beitia hit a 43-yard field goal in live scrimmage action. Rix hit Joslin Shaw on a slant for a touchdown late in the practice.

Drops punctuated the afternoon for the offense. Matt Henshaw, Dominic Robinson, Sam and Shaw all dropped open passes from Chris Rix and Sexton. Robinson had another jarred loose by Williams on what was the hit of the day.

For the defense, Charles Howard and Ernie Sims had sacks. A.J. Nicholson had a couple tackle for loss and an acrobatic pass breakup.

Bowden said that he would sit down with his staff to decide the best format for the Garnet and Gold game. Given the injury situation, a 22-on-22 live action game is unlikely. He admitted that at the start of the spring there was even talk of not holding an official game, substituting it for an extra practice session.

His coaches changed his mind.

"They said that it would be most beneficial to get the guys in a game situation to see who will stand up and who's not ready yet."

Due to scheduling conflicts, FSU and Texas A&M agreed to drop their upcoming home-and-home series. The teams were to play at A&M in 2005 and in Tallahassee the following year. The Seminoles are currently looking for an additional non-conference game to fill the void in both years.
