Diamond Notes

It's almost May and Mike Martin is still looking for the right combination for his starting rotation. After dropping all three games to Georgia Tech over the weekend, Martin will make adjustments again before a six-game road trip to Clemson and N.C. State.

Eddie Cannon – 3.87 ERA 7-4, 0-3 as the Friday starter, leads team with 74 1/3 IP

Rhett James – 3.72 ERA 4-2, lasted just 3 2/3 innings Sunday against Tech

Back in:

Hunter Jones – 3.84 ERA 3-2, out of the doghouse, Jones is the ace once again, he'll start the opener Saturday at Clemson (7 p.m.)

Sunday: (2 p.m.)

Brian Schultz – 2.74 ERA, 4-0, most reliable option out of the pen this season

Monday: (noon)

Mark Sauls – 5.28 ERA, 3-4, leads team in ER, BB, and BA against (.303), gave up nine runs in 3+ innings against Georgia Tech

Said Martin in today's Democrat: It's very late to be tweaking with the rotation but it's also something you have to do. You just can't see it go up in smoke without trying."

All three games against the Tigers can be seen on Sunshine Network.

For the fifth time this season and the seventh time in her career, Florida State softball player Jessica van der Linden was named the ACC Player of the Week. The senior All-America helped Florida State clinch its 11th ACC regular season championship versus North Carolina this Saturday in impressive fashion with her ninth career no-hitter and she drove in both game-winning RBIs in FSU's sweep of the Tar Heels. With van der Linden's honor, a Seminole has either won or shared the award nine times in 12 weeks this season. van der Linden is one of only two players to win the award on multiple occasions this season.

The Cerritos, CA native had a big weekend versus the Tar Heels as she hit .400, drove in the game-winning run in both games and went 1-0 in the circle with the ninth no-hitter of her career. Her RBI single in the third inning of game one was the only run scored by FSU as they downed UNC and ace Crystal Cox 1-0. Then in game two, van der Linden did it all as she no hit the Heels while striking out 14 batters and issuing just two walks. She also broke open a 0-0 game in the sixth inning with her second game-winning RBI of the day. The RBI sparked a five-run FSU rally that officially clinched the regular season title. The no-hitter was her fourth of the season. It was her first ever versus an ACC opponent and the first Seminole no-no versus an ACC squad since 1997.

The senior will be featured in an upcoming issue of Sports Illustrated previewing the spring championship season.

Florida State returns to action versus NC State Saturday, May 1 when they welcome the Wolfpack to Tallahassee. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. This is the first ever meeting between the schools as this is NC State's first season of softball. NCSU enters the week 32-23 and 3-5 in the ACC. The twin bill will be broadcast live over the Internet. There is no charge for the radio broadcast and the link to listen to the game is available at www.seminoles.com
