Seminoles Top Duke

ACC baseball action went late into the evening once again but the result was the same. FSU dispatched Duke and will face top seed Georgia Tech tonight at 5 p.m. Tech swept The Tribe in three meetings this season.

No. 19 Florida State (39-19) defeated the seventh-seeded Duke (25-30), 6-3, late Thursday night in ACC Tournament action in Salem, Va. FSU scored two runs in the seventh inning and one in the eighth to advance and face Georgia Tech in the winners' bracket.

Sophomore Brian Hernandez, junior Bryan Smith and freshman Corey Whiting tallied two hits apiece for the Blue Devils. Eddy Martinez-Esteve and Shane Robinson led Florida State with three hits apiece.

FSU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Senior Bryan Zech drew a lead-off walk and scored on a single by Martinez-Esteve.

The Blue Devils took a 2-1 lead in bottom of the second. Hernandez got things started with a lead-off single to left field and moved to second when Smith was hit by a pitch. A Whiting single loaded the bases and Hernandez scored on a double play. John Berger's single plated Smith with Duke's second run of the inning.

The Seminoles tied the game in the fourth inning and took a 3-2 lead in the fifth. Ryne Malone doubled down the left-field line to lead off the fourth inning and scored on a single by Gibbs Chapman. Martinez-Esteve led off the fifth with a triple off the right-field wall and scored on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Cheesman.

Smith led off the Blue Devil sixth with his 17th double of the year and scored the tying run on a single to left-center by Whiting.

FSU answered with two runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead. Stephen Drew and Martinez-Esteve hit a triple and double, respectively to start the inning. After a bunt single by Cheesman, Martinez-Esteve scored on a Malone sacrifice fly. The 'Noles scored an insurance run in the eighth after Robinson led off with a double and scored on FSU's third sacrifice fly of the game.

Senior RHP Zach Schreiber (5-5) took the loss for Duke after pitching 6.0-plus innings. He allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out four. Tyler Chambliss (4-1) picked up his second consecutive ACC Tournament win after pitching 4.0 scoreless innings.

FSU (39-19) will play top-seeded Georgia Tech in a winners' bracket game at 5:00 p.m., while Duke (25-30) will face No. 5 seed North Carolina on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in an elimination game. Senior right-hander Eddie Cannon (8-5) will take the mound for the Seminoles.
