Does Defensive Standout Have A New Leader?
Jon Demps of Pensacola (Fla.) Washington has been leaning towards LSU and Miami for some time. His older brother Willie Demps is a redshirt sophomore for the Tigers and the younger Demps has grown up a fan of the Hurricanes. However the Noles have one of the most successful defensive coordinators in college football on their side.
"Florida State is probably on top now," Demps said. "LSU and Miami aren't too far behind. I've always liked Mickey Andrews. He's doing a good job of keeping in touch with me by sending hand-written letters."
The Pensacola Washington standout will be busy the next couple of weeks with stops in Tallahassee, Gainesville and Baton Rouge.
"I'll be heading over to the Florida State camp on July 7th," he said. "After that I'll go to Florida and finish by attending the LSU camp on the 18th."
In the last year, Demps has grown a couple inches and packed on 30 pounds muscle. Some coaches think he could outgrow his linebacker body
"It doesn't matter where I play in college," he said. "Right now I'm a strong-side linebacker. Last year I was around 6-foot-3 and a skinny 190 pounds. I don't want to weigh no more than 240 pounds in college."
Last year Demps bench-pressed 285 pounds and squatted 405 pounds. His hard work over the year has yielded positive results. He now can bench 350 pounds and squat 500 pounds.
What factors will come into play?
"I'm going to take my visits and see what feels the most comfortable," he said. ‘I'm looking for someplace that will make me the most productive player. I won't decide until February."
The schools that are recruiting him the hardest are Florida, Maryland, Clemson, Florida State, Miami and LSU.
This fall Demps will attend a couple of LSU games and he also has plans to watch the Seminoles take on the Clemson Tigers on September 25th in Doak Campbell stadium.
