Wednesday Practice Report

The Seminoles worked out in shells for 20 periods Wednesday afternoon. A scrimmage was originally scheduled, but coaches opted for a lighter practice.

In 11-on-11 at the end of practice, Leon Washington broke a long run up the middle and Wyatt Sexton hit Lorne Sam on a 15-yard pass play. The defense got sacks from Travis Johnson, Kamerion Wimbley and Ray Piquion. Offensive guard Bobby Meeks and center David Castillo were held out of the majority of practice due to injury. Ron Lunford worked in Meeks' spot at tight guard and John Frady stepped in for Castillo at center.

The Seminoles will return to practice Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The final scrimmage of the preseason is scheduled for Friday evening in Doak Campbell Stadium.

The Bobby Bowden Show kicks of the 2004 season Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. The show will be televised locally on WTWC NBC 40 and can be heard on the radio at 94.9 WTNT and WFLA 1270.

Bobby Bowden QUOTES (on today's practice)

"I saw nothing special today. The defense has been a little more consistent so far, but that's kind of normal. We had (Bobby) Meeks and (David) Castillo out and they may be questionable for that first game."

RB Leon Washington

(on the running game and having a veteran offensive line)

"The running game is going real well right now. The offensive line is just like when me and Booker came in here. They have been together for awhile. Me and Booker and the rest of the young guys at tailback are ready to go. We are ready to get used to that offensive line and ready to get behind those veteran guys. The running game is going to be very important this year. We have got to have the running game to help Chris Rix and the rest of the quarterbacks out. Whenever we played games last year and won them comfortably we ran the ball very well in the beginning of the game and we came out with victories. The main thing is we just want to take the pressure off of Chris Rix and get the running game going."

(on he and Booker's expectations)

"Being at Florida State, you have high expectations as a player coming in. We definitely have to get it done - we don't have a choice. Our main thing this year is to stay healthy, stay focused and help to carry this team. The last couple years the defense has been carrying this team. They would shut people out and all we would have to do is score around 13-20 points. This year we want to put points on the board. We want our defense coming of the field after three points and let them chill out while we sustain a drive and run the ball very well. Me and Booker compliment each other quite well. Nobody can run the ball better in the open field and we can run between the tackles. I think we are going to feed off one another and have a good season."

DT Travis Johnson

(on the defense)

"We are on our way to being there. We have got a lot more work to do before that first game. Everyone is working hard and we are just trying to get better."

(on depth of the defensive line)

"We are not down. We are the fun bunch and we are better then we have been in the last five years. We think we will be one of the best defensive lines in the country. I think Brodrick (Bunkley) and I make a good duo inside. It's all a matter of us controlling the game."
