FSU/UM Mock Game: 2nd Quarter

Early in the second quarter, it appears that the Seminoles are trying to control the clock and limit mistakes by running and throwing the ball short. On the first play from scrimmage in the second period, Lorenzo Booker busts off a nice 20-yard run via the screen play.

Leading the way for number 28, were Jacky Claude and Cory Niblock who respectively leveled Greg Threat and Tavares Gooden. Leon Washington also chips in on a couple of nice 8-yard runs. Chris Davis makes a spectacular catch over the middle of the field but is crunched by free safety Anthony Reddick. The former St Petersburg quarterback is slow to get up and he is helped off the field. We learn later that Davis is diagnosed with a concussion. 6-foot-6 phenom Greg Carr trots onto the Miami 10-yard line and he is matched up against Miami's ace cornerback Kelly Jennings. Carr heads for the corner where Weatherford tosses a fade pass and the true freshman easily out-leaps Miami's senior defensive back for six points.

For the next several series both defenses tighten up and limit any significant drives from materializing. With a minute left until half time, the Seminoles are forced to punt. Chris Hall hits a booming 48-yard punt that's fielded by Devin Hester on the 15-yard line. The Miami speedster quickly heads for the sideline where he is assisted by several crunching blocks and he looks like he'll tie the game up. At the last second, however, freshman Eugene Hayes dives and makes a shoestring tackle.

With the outstanding return, the Hurricanes are looking at a1st and goal from the Seminole nine-yard line. However, the Florida State linebackers take over by stuffing one run and two passes forcing the Canes to settle for a field goal. A.J. Nicholson so far has a total of nine tackles and one pass break up to lead the Seminole defense. The Seminole secondary has held their own and the young corners are getting plenty of help from All-American Pat Watkins.

The Seminoles head into the locker room, with a 14-10 lead and it looks to be another close outcome.
