FSU/UM Mock Game: 3rd Quarter

The Seminoles deferred the opening kickoff and Kenny O'Neal and Antone Smith are back deep. The ball arrives in the hands of one of the country's fasted players in Speedy O'Neal. He runs right up the middle however, Willie "Steak Eating Linebacker" Williams gobbles him up on the 18-yard line.

Drew Weatherford, who passed for 130 yards and two touchdowns with only one interception in the first half, leads the offense onto the field for the third quarter. He lines up under center and hands the ball to Leon Washington, who is stuffed at the line of scrimmage by linebackers John Beason and Leon Williams. The next two passes are incomplete and the Seminoles are forced to punt. Chris Hall hits a boomer and Devin Hester is forced to fair catch the ball on the Seminole 30-yard line as Pat Watkins is right in his face.

In the first half, the Canes rushing game was pretty much shutdown. With that being said, Wright lines up in the shotgun and hits Ryan Moore on consecutive crossing patters. On the next play, freshman running back Derron Thomas takes a draw play for a nice 20-yard gain. With the ball on the Miami 25-yard line Wright drops back and has Ernie Sims and Buster Davis bearing down on him. Unfortunately for the Noles, the Canes called a screen pass to Derron Thomas for six points. The PAT is good and the Canes take a 17-14 lead.

On the next two processions Weatherford and the offense fail to move the ball and with 2:00 minutes left in the third quarter the Seminoles trot freshman signal caller Xavier Lee in for a spark. The Seminole fans give the former Army All-American a standing ovation and it's quite obvious that he's a fan favorite.

The whole stadium expects Lee to step back and fire a deep pass. However, he does quite the opposite and hits Lorenzo Booker on a screen pass for a 15-yard pick up. On the next play Lee runs a quarterback draw for a 14-yard gain. With the Seminoles driving past mid field, Lee steps back and fires deep for Kenny O'Neal. Unfortunately, Miami's Devin Hester is step for step and he out leaps O'Neal for an interception in the end zone to end the quarter.
