Solid pitching by Matt Lynch and an excellent relief performance by Daniel Hodges were enough to give Florida State a 6-4 win over arch-rival Miami on Friday night down in Coral Gables in front of 3,257 fans. Lynch (7-1) picked up the win, going 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs, and one walk while striking out six batters. Hodges earned his third save of the year with 2.3 innings of work.
The Seminoles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Bryan Zech was hit by a pitch and Nick Rogers singled. The runners both advanced when the throw from the outfield hit the umpire and rolled away. After Zech scored on a wild pitch, Tony McQuade blasted his second homerun of the season, off of Hurricane starter Dan Trouchet (3-2). Miami answered back in the bottom of the inning when Brad Safchik singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a a fielder's choice before scoring on a single by Kevin Howard. Danny Matienzo would later single in Matt Dryer who walked, to make it a 3-2 game.
FSU got one of those runs back in the second inning when Richie Smith walked and scored on an RBI-double hit by Stephen Drew. After a scoreless third inning, Drew made it a 5-2 game with a sacrifice fly that scored Jerrod Brown.
Florida State picked up one last run in the fifth when Ryan Barthelemy walked, stole second, and scored on a double by Blair McCaleb that made it 6-4.
The Canes rallied for two runs in the seventh inning and chased Lynch from the game with and RBI single by Alex Blanco that scored Kevin Mannix, and a fielder's choice groundball by Javy Rodriguez that scored Blanco.
The Seminoles improved to 32-11 on the season while UM fell to 18-16. FSU and Miami continue the series on Saturday at 7:00 with Blair Varnes (4-3 4.21) on the hill for the Noles against T.J. Prunty (4-2 5.76) for Miami.
