Matt Lynch (11-1) pitched his second consecutive complete game in a row to win a 4-0 shutout over the Maryland Terrapins in Friday's series opener. Lynch allowed only five hits and one walk while striking out eight batters in his eleventh win of the season. Maryland never even had a runner past second base during the game.

Florida State broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth when Nick Rogers reached on a fielding error by the Terp thirdbaseman, Anthony Buffone. After stealing second, Rogers scored when Bryan Zech singled to center field that gave FSU a 1-0 lead. The Noles could have scored more when Tony Richie and Richie Smith walked to load the bases, but Stephen Drew struck out to end the inning.

The Seminoles added another run in the next inning when Tony McQuade led off with a single to right, advanced to second on a groundball, and scored on a single to center by Rogers.

With Lynch cruising on the hill, the Noles picked up two more runs in the sixth when Richie led off with a walk and Smith doubled to right-center to put runners on the corners with no outs. After a pitching change for Maryland, Drew grounded out to short and McQuade walked to load the bases. Ryan Barthelemy then hit a fly ball to center that scored Richie and moved Smith to thirdbase. One perfectly executed double steal later, and Smith crossed the plate to give FSU a 4-0 lead.

Florida State improved to 46-12 and 13-6 in the ACC while the Terrapins fell to 33-20 and 6-15 in conference play. Game two of the series takes place on Saturday night at 7:00 with Marc LaMacchia (8-1 3.08) on the mound for FSU against Chris Clem (3-4 6.65) for Maryland.
