Regional Capsules

Here are the nuts and bolts for this weekend's NCAA Regional at Dick Howser Stadium. Also included are comments from the respective head coaches and some fun facts. Did you know Stetson -- the Seminoles' opening opponent -- has won an amazing 82 of its last 83 games when leading after six innings? "These coaches have got it done. ... Well, let's just put it this way. You all see these guys on my schedule?" FSU coach Mike Martin asked Thursday.

Florida State

Seed:1

Record: 56-12

Conference: Atlantic Coast Conference

Regional Appearances: 40

Last Appearance: 2001

Regional Record:106-50

CWS Appearances:18

Head Coach: Mike Martin

Year at school: 23rd

Record at school: 1235-414-3

How Qualified: ACC Champions

Martin says:"It's something that you know when you go into against these three guys (opponent head coaches) that you better play well because these guys have been around the block. Or, like coach Chip Baker (FSU assistant) says, it ain't their first rodeo. These coaches have got it done for many years. Well, let's just put it this way. You all see these guys on my schedule?"

Fun Fact:With a sweep of Clemson and a 5-0 mark in the ACC Tournament, FSU has tied the school record with a 22-game winning streak. FSU has won 22 straight twice before -- 1991 (March 2-30) and 1996 (March 5-April 5). Stephen Drew (.429), Nick Rogers (.389) and Tony Richie (.375) have been FSU's top hitters during that streak. The ACC record winning streak is 26, set by Clemson in 1977.

Central Florida

Seed: 2

Record: 40-20

Conference:Atlantic Sun

Regional Appearances:8

Last Appearance:2001

Regional Record:8-14

CWS Appearances: none

Head coach:Jay Bergman

Year at school: 20th

Record at school: 795-447-3

How Qualified:Atlantic Sun Champions

Bergman says:"We've played our best baseball towards the end of the season. We have a young team. We don't hit a lot of home runs. We only hit 30. In fact, we were the only team in our conference (tournament) that did not hit a home run although we scored 40 runs."

Fun Fact:UCF leads the Atlantic Sun Conference and ranks 19th in the country with a team earned-run average of 3.81. In 489 innings pitched this season, UCF has totaled 466 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .257. Even more impressively, UCF has allowed double-figure runs in just two games this season. Stetson scored 10 runs and 13 runs in the final two games of the series at UCF earlier this season.

South Florida

Seed: 3

Record: 33-27

Conference:Conference USA

Regional Appearances: 10

Regional record:8-18

Last Appearance: 2001

CWS Appearances: none

Head coach: Eddie Cardieri

Year at school:17th

Record at school: 611-425

How Qualified: At large

Cardieri says: "If we pitch as well as we did in the conference tournament, we will have a shot. The big thing for us is to try to get all cyclinders going at the same time. I don't believe we've done that for any extended stretch this entire season. We lost some games, where we shot ourselves in the foot. But we also had some really good wins along the way as well."

Fun Fact:USF's bid is its 10th overall, its second consecutive and its fifth in the last eight seasons. USF's last four NCAA Regional appearances have been at-large berths. The Bulls are 2-1 against UCF this season and 2-3 against Stetson. USF's last game with FSU was in 2000 (18-7 defeat). The Bulls' starting rotation of Jon Uhl (8-4) Jason Barts (1-3), and John Gorham (5-8) were a combined 14-15 record with a 5.02 ERA.

Stetson

Seed: 4

Record:42-17

Conference:Atlantic Sun

Regional Appearances:12

Regional Record:13-22

Last Appearance: 2001

CWS Appearances: none

Head coach: Pete Dunn

Years at school: 23rd

Record at school:852-503-3

How Qualified:At large

Dunn says:"We (Martin and Dunn) both had the opportunity to take over our respective programs the same year. I am in my 23rd year and I know Mike's in his 23rd year. The only problem is, he has about 1,000 more victories than I do in the same amount of time (laughing). ... I can guarantee you that the Seminoles won't be overmatched by Roger Lincoln (12-3, 3.55 ERA/Stetson scheduled starter) tomorrow night (Friday). He's a little lefty who throws strikes. He has a huge heart."

Fun Fact:First baseman Bryan Zenchyk, second baseman Andy Wilson, third baseman Brian Snyder and catcher Chris Westervelt have been the cornerstone for the Hatters this season. Combined they are batting .383 with 52 home runs, 214 RBI and a .654 slugging percentage. All four have batting averages of .370 or better and all four are tops among the team leaders in hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and total bases.

Fun Fact II: The Hatters are 34-1 this year when leading after six innings, and they have won an amazing 82 of their last 83 games when leading after six innings. Florida Atlantic has the last two come-from-behind victories over Stetson -- April 19 this season and April 30, 2000. Stetson pitchers also have earned 20 saves this season, setting a new school record.
