Top-Ranked Florida State Hosts Notre Dame

The Seminoles (59-12) will host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish for an NCAA Super Regional this weekend at Dick Howser Stadium.

#1 FLORIDA STATE (59-12)

The ACC Champion Seminoles extended their school-record winning streak to 25 games after going 3-0 in last weekend's NCAA Regional in Tallahassee. Florida State is ranked No. 1 in all three major polls and is the top national seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles are led by All-American third baseman Ryan Barthelemy (.367, 17 HR, 91 RBI) and All-American left-hander Matt Lynch (13-1, 3.34 ERA). Lynch will start on the mound Friday and will be followed by Blair Varnes (9-3, 3.88 ERA) and Marc LaMacchia (11-1, 3.41 ERA). ACC Rookie of the Year Stephen Drew leads the team with a .395 batting average and is second on the club with 16 home runs. All-American catcher Tony Richie (.350, 12 HR, 73 RBI) was named the Regional MVP after going 8-for-13 with five RBI.

#11 NOTRE DAME (47-15)

The Fighting Irish moved up to No. 11 in both the Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball polls after advancing from the South Bend Regional as a No. 2 seed. Outfielders Steve Stanley (.445, 31 SB) and Brian Stavisky (.404, 7 HR, 49 RBI) lead Notre Dame offensively. The Irish have rebounded from a 9-10 start to finish 47-15, winning 29 of their last 32 games during the second half of the season. Notre Dame will start RHP Grant Johnson (8-4, 3.11 ERA) on Friday and RHP Pete Ogilvie (7-3, 3.68 ERA) on Saturday.

THE SERIES

Florida State leads the all-time series with Notre Dame 4-2, which dates back to 1956. The teams last met in 1998, when the Fighting Irish defeated the Seminoles in the season opener by a score of 10-1 in Orlando. In 1993, FSU beat Notre Dame 7-3 in the second round of NCAA Regional play in Tallahassee before being eliminated by the Irish 4-3 later in the regional. Florida State won a 12-5 meeting in 1956 and two games in 1958 (5-2 and 3-2).
