The No. 3 Florida State Seminoles held their third and final scrimmage of preseason practice Friday night at Doak Campbell Stadium. Senior Talman Gardner, who has been the leading receiver in each of the three scrimmages, had another big day with three catches for 90 yards and a touchdown as the first team downed the scout team by a score of 20-3. The regular scrimmage lasted for a half as the coaches switched to situational work on a running clock in the second half. FSU travels to Kansas City Thursday for an August 24th contest against Iowa State in the Eddie Robinson Classic at Arrowhead Stadium.

"The big thing I see is that we're not sharp," said head coach Bobby Bowden. "We've got seven more days to get this thing sharpened up and I sure hope we can do it. We went down there (redzone) too many times and only came up with three. This will give us a chance to go back and grade the film and straighten out the ones who aren't doing the right thing."

Chris Rix worked the entire half as the starter at quarterback, completing 8-of-17 passes for 149 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Rix connected with Joey Kaleikini for a 26-yard touchdown to start the scoring in the first quarter. Rix then hit Gardner for a score from 25 yards out. Xavier Beitia made field goals of 22 and 42 yards to complete the scoring for the first unit.

Freshman walk-on Zach Oller nailed a 25-yard field goal as the first half expired to put the scout team on the board.

Lorenzo Booker was the leading rusher, carrying three times for 36 yards. Greg Jones ran twice for 23 yards and Willie Reid finished with 21 yards on three carries.

Linebackers Michael Boulware (five tackles) and Kendyll Pope (four tackles, one sack) paced the Seminoles defensively. Allen Augustin added three tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss while Kevin Emanuel chipped in with two tackles and a fumble recovery. Pat Watkins and Rufus Brown each had an interception.

At the Kickoff Luncheon earlier in the day, Bowden named his team captains. Senior offensive tackle Brett Williams (offense), senior middle linebacker Jerel Hudson (defense) and senior rover Patrick Newton (special teams) were selected as captains. For the first time ever, Bowden also named junior alternate captains – Boulware and wide receiver Anquan Boldin. Both juniors were commended for their leadership and work ethic during the offseason. Permanent captains will be voted on by the team at the end of the season.

Injury Report: FB Torrance Washington (right hip pointer); DE Charles Howard (right knee MCL sprain, right thumb sprain); WR Lorne Sam (right separated shoulder).
