Weatherford to start in Emerald Bowl

Redshirt sophomore quarterback announced as starter following Thursday's practice.

Drew Weatherford didn't know it when he came off Bobby Bowden Field Thursday but following the final practice in Tallahassee of the 2006 football season, he quickly found out.

A few minutes prior to his exit from the field, head coach Bobby Bowden had announced him as the starting quarterback for the Emerald Bowl.

"You guys found out before I did," Weatherford said with a laugh. "It's always a great opportunity to come out and start for Florida State. It's been my dream for so long.

"I am glad I have another opportunity and I am looking forward to taking advantage of it and playing well."

Bowden had remained close to the vest all week when asked about who would get the starting nod under center.

He had mentioned that he might not announce a starter until the team was in California. Instead, he saw all he needed to while at home.

"I watched them all week. I wanted to let them compete all week to see if there ought to be a change," Bowden said of the battle between Weatherford and Xavier Lee. "After practicing all week I still think he ought to be starting."

As for Lee, he has been granted repititions with the first team throughout the week but there is no plan as of right now to get him into the ballgame.

But Bowden isn't ruling it out.

It could be before the game we decide to do something but right now there's no plan," Bowden said. "Just go out and play the doggone ballgame and play to win and do whatever you have to do to win."
