Player Perspective

FSU's win over Iowa State was obviously too close for comfort. Brett Williams talked to The Territory about the Seminoles' effort and what needs to be done this week in practice as FSU prepares for its home opener Saturday against Virginia. "A lot of the young guys after we won are jumping up and down celebrating after the game. And all the older guys were like, ‘Whew, let's go tell the other team good game and let's get in the locker room.' We knew we got away with one," Williams said.

Senior offensive lineman Brett Williams talks to The Territory about the Seminoles' opening win against Iowa State.

"It was the first game. We played a little sloppy, but that's expected. We're glad just to get the win. We got up on them, I kind of think we got lackadaisical. They crept back up on us and kind of caught us surprise. It was good for us. It was a good wakeup call for us.

"The first half, we were rolling. We came out – that's the one thing we have to work on and we didn't have it least year, either. That killer instinct, that once you get up on somebody just to put them away. That's the thing we have to work on this coming week. I thought we (offensive linemen) played decent. We got the running game going pretty well. There was a couple pass protections I thought we could have done a little better on, picking up the twists and stuff like that. But, overall, for the first game I thought we did pretty good. It was a very loud crowd, so I thought we did alright.

"They had a lot of fight. They weren't that quick of a defense but they played hard, and the crowd was loud and it made it difficult to hear a lot of the calls. But they didn't quit. They weren't exceptionally quick, but they were decent. Yeah, we missed Milford (Brown), but we have to go on and play for him. But everything went well as far as everybody knowing what they were suppose to. We played well together.

"No matter how much running you do in two-a-days you can't ever get in the game shape that you would like for that first game. I thought conditioning was a little bit of factor but that just comes with playing the games. You have to play them. I thought we were a little tired. We got that first game under us – Thank God it was a win.

"I wasn't worried about it, the last drive. I don't know why. There was something about it, I thouht we weren't going to lose. I don't know what it was. Coach Bowden was happy we got the win. All the coaches were. That's all you can be after you get a win like that. But I am sure we will have a lot to talk about on Monday.

"At times we were focused. When they scored and we knew we had to come back with an answer, when we were focused I thought we moved the ball well. When we get a little lazy out there, we kind of got a little sloppy. When we get a team back on their heels, we have to put an extra two scores up there to end it quick.

"The first half, it (shoulder) was killing me. After that, I guess it got loose. The first half I was wondering if I was able to finish. It was the first real contact I've had since I hurt it, so every little bump on it was killing me.

"Overall, I was really pleased with the way Chris played and how everyone played. It was good to see Quan (Anquan Boldin) and Robert (Morgan) back in the huddle. Everytime you see those guys you get a boost of confidence, because you know if you get the ball to them they can make something happen. It was good to see them back out there. I thought we got our confidence back as an offense. We went out there with a little more confidence in what we are doing.

"We won. We wanted to win a lot better than that, a lot bigger than that just to make a statement. At the same time, teams are going to see that win and go, ‘Oh, Florida State isn't that good.' So that can work in our favor, too. We need it (tough week of practice). It will be good to have a home game, have the fans here. I think it will be good as far as getting our momentum going.

"Everybody knew it. A lot of the young guys after we won are jumping up and down celebrating after the game. And all the older guys were like, ‘Whew, let's go tell the other team good game and let's get in the locker room.' We knew we got away with one. We fought when we had to. The defense came up with the plays when they had to, and that's what matter.'
