Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden announced Thursday that defensive ends coach Jody Allen will add the title of Special Teams Coordinator when spring practice begins on March 16.
"Jody has done an excellent job over the years with our punt block team and has been instrumental in the success of many of our special teams," said Bowden. "He has been interested in all our kicking game and it is a good fit to put him in a position to oversee all the special teams. Each of our coaches will still be involved in coaching on different units, but Jody will be coordinating them all."
Allen completed his seventh season on the FSU staff in 2006 where he has served as defensive ends coach for the last five years. He was a graduate assistant working with the defensive backs at Florida State during the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
"I'm honored and thrilled to be even more involved in the special teams," said Allen. "Ever since I came to Florida State I've heard Coach Bowden talk about the importance of special teams. I'm honored that he's giving me the chance to coordinate them. We have an outstanding coaching staff and all the coaches will continue to be very involved. I think we will streamline the process of coaching the kicking game and give ourselves a chance to be even more successful."
Allen, 44, came to Florida State after coaching at Valdosta State in 1999. He coached at Griffin High School (GA) in 1998 after spending the 1997 season at Murray State coaching wide receivers. He was special teams coordinator for British Columbia and Shreveport of the CFL in 1994 and 1995. Prior to the CFL, Allen was offensive coordinator at Arkansas State in 1993 and coached the receivers in 1992. He was at Ole Miss from 1987-91 and a graduate assistant at Alabama in 1984-85 before being elevated to receivers coach in 1986. He was an assistant coach at VMI in 1983 after graduating from Valdosta State in the same year.
