The top-ranked FSU baseball team responded quite nicely to its first loss of the season with an impressive 5-1 win over Boston College in ACC play. Bryan Henry pitched brilliantly going eight innings and striking out 10 batters as he improved his record to 8-0. Dennis Guinn paced the Seminole offense going 4-for-4 with a career high three doubles. The win kept Florida State perfect in ACC play at 4-0 and improved the team's overall record to 24-1. The Eagles fell to 6-9-1 and 4-3 in conference action.
"I thought we played a solid baseball game, said Seminole Head Coach Mike Martin. "It all starts with the guy out there on the bump. Bryan Henry did a great job. I was very impressed with the way he kept his poise. I tell you what, Boston College is a very good baseball team and (BC starter Kevin Boggan) can pitch with anybody."
"It was good and it was a lot of fun," said Henry of his outing. "I have some things I need to continue to work on. I was able to have good command of my fastball tonight, which let me work in my off speed pitches. It worked out well. The defense did great picking it up behind me."
Four different Seminoles recorded multi-hit games. Tony Thomas, Jr. continued his torrid hitting going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Mark Hallberg and Buster Posey also collected multiple hits with two a piece but it was Guinn who led the way. The left fielder set a new career high with four hits in a conference game.
"It felt good especially since the way I have been swinging it," said Guinn. "I have had confidence but I was seeing the ball really good tonight. I felt like I was staying back up the middle. I felt really good at the plate."
"Dennis has been very persistent," said Martin. "He has really stuck with it. He has worked hard with (Mike Martin, Jr.) seeing the ball a little better. It couldn't have come at a better time."
The Seminoles got off to a good start versus Boggan as they staged a two-out rally in the bottom of the third as both Thomas and Hallberg singled bringing up Buster Posey. The FSU catcher followed with the third straight hit as Florida State broke in front 1-0.
Henry's first walk of the game turned out to be costly as it was followed by an RBI double knotting the game at 1-1 in the fourth. A deep fly ball out moved the runner to third with one away. Henry got the second out on an infield fly but lost the next batter putting runners on the corners. The senior got out of the inning though with a called third strike.
Guinn opened the fourth with his second double of the game, a new career high. Tommy Oravetz sacrificed Guinn to third. FSU could not plate the run though as Guinn was thrown out at home on a ground ball hit to short.
FSU mustered another two -out run to go on top in the fifth. Thomas reached on a walk, moved to second on a ground out and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. An error at short then brought the run home.
Guinn continued to add to his career day when he led off the bottom of the sixth with his third double of the game. Oravetz followed with a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. A ground out brought Guinn home as the lead grew to 3-1.
The Seminoles once again put runners on the corners in the bottom of the seventh and once again Guinn delivered. The outfielder recorded his fourth hit of the game, tying a career high, and extending the FSU lead to 4-1.
"To get that RBI, we needed that one at the end of a close game," said Guinn. "Going 4-for-4 really helped the team and that is all I can ask of myself."
The Seminoles tacked on an insurance run in the eighth. After Mark Gildea walked, Brandon Reichert singled. A double steal moved both runners into scoring position and then Thomas cashed in with his third hit of the game, a new career high for the second baseman in a conference game.
Florida State and Boston College will continue their series Saturday at 6:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast in Tallahassee on FSN Florida. Fans can follow all the action over the Internet. Gametracker will be available for the contest along with live radio broadcast courtesy of 1270 the TEAM.
