Bobby's Corner

Here are coach Bobby Bowden comments following Monday's practice, as the fifth-ranked Seminoles (2-0) turn their attention to Saturday's road game at defending ACC champion Maryland (1-1). Bowden also shares his thoughts on Miami's convincing victory over Florida last Saturday. "I was amazed Miami could do what they did. I was amazed. As many times as we've been in there and when we win, we come away with a close win, and they go in there and just dominate. That's amazing," Bowden said.

Here are coach Bobby Bowden's comments following Monday's practice.

"I think (Marcello) Church got hurt today. I am not sure how bad. He might have broke his arm or something (fractured hand). We had a pretty good practice. Typical Tuesday practice, but since we had an open date last week we had our Tuesday practice today. I think everybody else reported in pretty good shape.

Were the kids pretty spirited after three days off?

"I thought it was a pretty spirited pracitce. Some of the coaches probably didn't like what they saw some of the time, but you know how that works. Overall, I thought it was a pretty good Monday practice."

Did you get a chance to watch the Miami-Florida game? And what were your impressions?

"I sure did. I was amazed Miami could do what they did. I was amazed. As many times as we've been in there and when we win, we come away with a close win, and they go in there and just dominate. That's amazing. Lose as many as good boys as they lost, you would expect to be some kind of dropoff. I didn't see any dropoff."

Were you more impressed with their defense or their offense?

"Both of them. Running the ball was very impressive. They did an excellent job. They are definitely No. 1. There's no doubt about that. I didn't see it (any weaknesses)."

It reinforces how difficult it is to beat both of those teams in the same year.

"You play both of them, you are asking for trouble."

Does it say anything about your own team and things you feel you need to do?

"We've got a long way to go. It's very important that we get better every Saturday. If we don't, we won't make it. I am very concerned about this Maryland football team. They made a lot of improvement over last week and they are suppose to get that good running back (Bruce Perry) this week, which I think they will. We have to be prepared for him. He puts another dimension in their offense. Their defense is playing real well, even though Notre Dame got 22 points they didn't score a single touchdown against their defense.

Is this a game that you knew your team had to be geared up for?

"It's the same setting as North Carolina last year. Identical. We were 2-0. We had 9/11 that came and we didn't play that weekend (agianst Georgia Tech). This week, we are 2-0. Open date. It's going to be the same type of setting. Sure will."

FSU and Maryland each have something to prove this year. Which team do you think has the most pressure on it?

"Pressure? Probably equal. They want it as bad as they do. They are the defending (ACC) champions. We like to be champions. This game will have a lot to do about that."

Are you happy with your defensive rotation?

"It's different than the last couple of years, because we have really gotten slack on that. It's a healthy thing if you can do it. I am not sure how many drives Virginia had when our second-unit was in there. Then we put our first unit back. I know we are playing a lot of people, and that's good."
