FSU lands classic Florida athlete

Entering the 2008 recruiting season, defensive end was a need position for FSU. Last night FSU secured a commitment from one of their targets in Toshmon Stevens, a versatile athlete from Crescent City H.S. in Crescent City, FL. NoleDigest was able to catch up with the standout to discuss his commitment, his goals for his senior season and plans to still visit other colleges.

Why did you decide to commit to FSU?

TS: After talking it over with my parents, we decided that FSU would be a good place for me to play my college football and get a good education. I want to get my masters in criminology and FSU is the only school close that I feel I can do that at. FSU was my dream school growing up. My entire family has always been FSU.

When did you get the formal offer?

TS: On July 16th at their camp. Coach Jody Allen gave me the offer. I was shocked when I got it, but it felt really good to get it.

What position is FSU recruiting you as?

TS: Right now more of a defensive end, but they plan on working me at tight end also. It doesn't matter to me what I play. I just want to go to school, play football, contribute and have fun.

Can you discuss your relationship with the coaches?

TS: I have a great relationship with them. Coach Trickett and Coach Allen are always looking out for my best interests, no matter what. I really appreciate that from them.

What are your expectations for your senior season?

TS: I want to help my team get past the 1st round of the playoffs. We always get there and lose. I want to get at least to the final four. Also, I want to get bigger. Right now I am 6'5" and 205 pounds. I am looking to get to 220 when I go to college. I know I can get there as I have been there before, but I want to be that weight with muscle and being in shape.

What other schools were you hearing from?

TS: I have 14 offers from schools like Virginia Tech, Purdue, USF, Illinois, Arizona State, NC State and some others.

Is this commitment solid?

TS: It is for me. I am still going to take some visits though. I am taking some unofficial visits to NC State, Virginia Tech, Clemson and Tennessee. I am going to take some officials too, but I am not sure yet on those.

Why did you go ahead and pull the trigger?

TS: My family and I decided it was best to commit now. It is a lot sooner than I thought it would be, but the time felt right. I just want to see some of these schools to see what is going on. My parents want me to do the same. But from the reaction from my parents and what they are saying, I won't be changing (schools). FSU is a good place, the culture there is nice and they have my major. For my parents, I'm close and they can keep tabs on me to make sure I'm doing the things I'm supposed to.
