Are the Noles' going after Ray?

Florida State is making a point to "put up fences" around the area in hopes of keeping the talent in the area home for college. One of the top players in the area, Melvin Ray, had yet to receive an offer, thus he committed to Alabama in July. OC Jimbo Fisher stopped in to see the 4-star receiver. NoleDigest caught up with the NFC star to see if he got an offer and where FSU stands at this point.

In July, Alabama landed the commitment of Ray after some thought it would be a FSU/Florida battle. Jimbo Fisher has recently showed renewed interest in Ray, and he explains the visit they had this week, "The visit went really well. Fisher and I have had a good relationship throughout this whole process. We just chit-chatted and talked about recruiting and my feelings about FSU. A lot of people thought took my commitment to Alabama as 100%. The whole time I was considering visits and all. This is a long process. Growing up a FSU fan there is still room for some changes."

Among the recruiting talk Fisher and Ray talked about the big topic: an offer. So did he get it? Ray explains, "I'm getting the offer. He asked me if they had a shot, and I said they do. He said that's all they needed to know. This was the real face-to-face chat we had. It feels real nice to get this offer. I'm getting this offer now because Fisher wasn't sure if I really wanted it. Leading up to the Alabama commitment he was going to offer me, after I committed he didn't extend it to me. After this talk he got the feelings that I really like FSU. He is coming by practice today to watch me. At that time we are going to sit and talk about the date for an official. I am taking a visit there."

So, now that Ray has gotten the offer where does that leave his commitment? "At the moment I am still committed. For me it's going to come down to where I feel the most comfortable. You never really know. I am going to take these visits and enjoy and learn about them. I am just going to enjoy the process, and at the end of the day make the best choice in where I want to be," said Ray.

Recruiting isn't the only big thing going for Melvin right now. This Friday his team is playing in the state championship game against America Heritage. He says, "We are looking good right now and we are rolling. We are a hard team to match up with. I'm leading the area in touchdown receptions and I'm having a great individual season. I get a chance to play with another great receiver and we help each other a lot."

Playing at North Florida Christian has enabled Ray to get a chance to play with former Nole great Casey Weldon. That is an opportunity he appreciates and has learned a lot from. "One thing I like is that he doesn't bother me too much with recruiting. He supports me in the decision I make. He tells me little things I need to look out for and stuff like that. I love playing for him because he really knows what he's doing. I don't regret coming over from Chiles at all because I get a chance to win. I get a chance here to play on the playoffs and have some success," said Ray.

With the last game of his high school career coming this Friday, Ray knows his attention is going to move to recruiting afterwards. The FSU offer was a big deal for him, and it has left Ray with things to contemplate. He says, "This offer has opened things up for me and leaves me to think about my options. I have to think about what I got coming from these other schools, leaving me with a decision to make. I think I'll be a Signing Day decision. I am looking at taking visits to Georgia and LSU as well as FSU. These visits are going to help me make my choice so there are no regrets."
