Rix Speaks Out

In a candid interview, embattled quarterback Chris Rix met with the media following Tuesday's practice. "This whole situation is something I really can't control. I played as hard as I could have. I feel I played my heart out on Saturday. Things didn't go as well as we wanted, but in my opinion I have nothing to hang my head about, just learn from some of the mistakes I did have," Rix said of his effort against Notre Dame Saturday. WHAT DO YOU EXPECT YOUR ROLE TO BE?

"The same role, but a different role, at least for this Saturday. Still want to be a postive, encouragment for the team. Of course I want them to win the game, that's the bottom line. But just a little different. I'm not gonna let this break me. I 'm not gonna mope about it or hang my head, I just want us to win and hopefully AD can get that done on Saturday. Because we need to win the ACC, that's our big goal right now.

"So it has changed, but this week I'm trying to do the same thing preparation wise if we had won 50-nothing against Notre Dame and that's learn from my mistakes from last week after watching the game, and just get better and be ready for this Saturday when called upon, whether that's this week, next week, whenever. And I'll be ready to go."

ANY INDICATION PRIOR TO NOTRE DAME GAME COACHES CONSIDERING A CHANCE?

"As far as I know it's strictly on the Notre Dame game. There wasn't any talk about it before. I think I had a good Miami game, and they hand't mentioned any talk about this before. I think it's based on last Saturday's performance and they're proud of the way AD came in and the way he played and he did do a good job. Anyone who watched the game saw he did a very good job and hopefully he can do the same thing this week."

EVER BEEN THORUGH GETTING REPLAC3ED BEFORE?

"Well, it was different. Something that happened in high school. One of my receives got hurt third to last game and they asked me to play some receiver. I did that and my backup played and we did a good job our last two games. We didn't win. But I did give way to someone else my senior year of high school. So, yes and no. "But never due to performance have I stepped aside. It's new, but it's football. It's something you got to deal with. Like I said, bottom line, I'm not gonna let it break me. I'm still here, I'm still part of this and I still want us to win."

HOW COME TO GRIPS WITH IT?

"Well, it's the game of football. People want to win. That's the object of the game. We did't win. They feel I did't do, I guess, a well enough job to get the job done and they want to give someone else a shot and that's Adrian. So you know it's not the best news in the world, but I think it's a matter of how you handle it and I know I'm gonna handle it about as well as anyone can handle it. I'm not going anywhere and I'm gonna be ready when called upon, if called upon, again to do my job and that's help this team win."

HOW HAVE YOU SEEN A.D. IMPROVE?

"It's a year of experience, even though it's not game time expereience, he's been able to of course learn in practice, go through the drills in practice and come in and get some time at the end of games and sometimes the middle of games part of the season, so he kind of has a luxury I didn't have. That's just a good situation he's been in but he's definitely gotten better and he's a much beter player than last year and I think he's anxoius to show that this Saturday, so we'll see what happens."

WILL YOU OFFER ADVICE?

"I've been trying to be as positive, encourager as I can, to not only the team , but to him. Today helping him out with reads, ball plays, on anything I can help him out with the last two days I've been talking to him. Whether he takes that, that's something I can't control.

"This whole situation is something I really can't control. I played as hard as I could have. I feel I played my heart out on Saturday. Things didn't go as well as we wanted, but in my opinion I have nothing to hand my head about, just learn from some of the mistakes I did have. Like I said, there's no way I'm going to let this break me. I'm gonna be ready when called upon again."

IS IT A FAIR DECISION?

"I have no comment on that."

HOW ARE TEAMMATES SUPPORTING YOU?

"I think they're excited for Adrian. I think they're excited that he's gonna get his shot. Some of the guys I'm close with on the team and some of my true friends have given me positive support and told me to keep my head up and that's exactly what I'm gonna do.

"I know the guys that are behind me and I know the guys that are behind Adrian and want to see him succeed. It's intresting and we'll see what happens. But bottom line I want us to win on Saturday. I want us to win the rest of our games and win the ACC and get a BCS bid and however we can get that done, so be it, but I'll be ready to do my job when they need me."

ADVICE FROM YOUR DAD?

"Advice my dad gave me, probably what everyone else is saying, keep your head up, be positive, and be ready because you never know what could happen. It could be the second quarter, it could be games from now when I'm called upon again and that's all I can do is be prepared and be ready and not take a back seat or look at this in a negative way. But as I guess a learning experience. It's kind of hard to say that things happen for a reason, but I firmly believe that. I've believed that my whole life. What the reason is, right now I don't' know. But I know God's got a plan and whatever happens everthing will be fine, whatever works out, whether for me or for Adrian. Best thing I can do is just look at this in a positive way and not let it distract me from the things I have to do every day."

(DID COACHES) GIVE YOU SPECIFICS WHY CHANGING? WHAT DID THEY SAY?

"They both kind of hopefully said the same things they said to you guys, in that, we could have helped you out on Saturday in the first half with some play caling and some catching the balls, but you did struggle in the second half and Adrian came in, played well and we want to give him a shot.

"I told Coach Bowden, like I said last season, throughout this season, even to you guys, I've supported every decision he's made for me, good or bad. Ever since I got here. I told him that when I first got to Florida State and I'm not gonna be a hypocrite in that or go agaisnt that, I said whatever decision yo umake in my career here I'll trust and this is n't maybe as good as some of the other decisions that he's made for me, but I respect it and I'm gonna honor it and back his decision and not go against it."

THE LOCKER ROOM WAS A STRANGE PLACE AFTER THE GAME. HOW HAVE YOU DEALT WITH THAT?

"Well, I don't realy know the specifics on what happened Saturday after the game in the locker room. I've heard a couple different stories . I know guys were definitely frustrated, I was one of them. Bottom line, to sum that up, I could have played better in that game, a lot of people could have played better in that game and I know I didn't lose that. I know a lot of peple were frustrated, I was frustrated, but I think everyone should look in the mirror and see what they're doing before they start judging other people, because I know one word hasn't come out of my mouth criticizing any player on either side of the ball because my job is to improve on the things that I do. When someone plays a perfect game then they can start talking aobut other people, but I don't think that's a characteristic of very good team (unity) if people are criticizing other people, when they have stuff I'm sure they can work on.

"I think everone could have played better. If everyone takes care of their job improving on their game I think well be fine the rest of the season."
