Mississippi DE likes FSU

Josh Boyd is one of the top prospects from Mississippi for 2009. The talented defensive lineman has seen his recruitment get off to a good start, as schools from the Big 10, SEC and ACC have already offered. NoleDigest got up with Josh to get his thoughts on his recruitment and to get his thoughts on the Seminoles.

Josh Boyd is a defensive end/tackle prospect from Philadelphia High School in Philadelphia, MS. The 6'3" and 275 pound prospect had a great junior season as he amassed 154 tackles, 27 tackles for a loss, 10 sacks and 4 blocked kicks on special teams. At this time he comes in as the 16th ranked defensive tackle on Scout.com. His junior season put him on the map, and schools from all over are already throwing in their hats into the ring in an attempt to land the talented athlete.

"Recruiting has been going pretty good. Florida State, Auburn, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Alabama and Michigan have already offered me. A lot of other schools are looking at me, too. Florida has been, I think. My coaches have handled most of recruitment so far. When the college coaches can talk to me I will get more involved."

Some have felt that being from Mississippi means that Boyd likes the in-state programs. He told NoleDigest that at this time he is pretty open and wants to look around to see what's out there.

"I'm pretty much open and I am looking around at the schools who are offering me. I've never had a favorite team growing up because up until 7th grade I always played basketball. I quit playing last year so I can focus strictly on football."

Florida State is a school that is coming hard at Boyd. Defensive tackle coach Odell Haggins really likes the kid, and at this time it seems like Josh is planning on returning the love to the Seminoles.

I have FSU up there on my list. They're a pretty good team. I have family in Florida that is close to the school. I've never been there, but I am planning on camping there this summer. I've spoken to Coach Haggins. He was telling me how the coaches liked my film and that they wanted to offer me. Right now I am a defensive end, and I may stay in college. He really liked how I man-handled the guy I was going against. He seems like a real nice guy. I liked how he was straight and to the point with me. Florida State is a school I have a lot of interest in, and they will come down to the end with me. I want to learn more when I go to the camp this summer."

Before he gets going on the summer camp circuit, Boyd wants to work on his game. He wants to refine his pass rush more, as he feels at this time he is a better run stopper.

"I'm a hard worker and I am quick off the ball. My quickness and my power are what make me a good player. I want to work on my pass rush more. I'm okay at it, but I need to get better at it. I'm able to push my guy around and stop the run right now more than rushing the passer."

Josh is a big defensive end at the high school level. His combination of size and speed are often times too hard for high school players to handle. He wants to stay at defensive end in college, but some project him to continue to get bigger, which means he'll probably move inside.

"With my size I run really well. I run a 4.8 40, so I can move. I feel like I am a bigger guy who can run very well; that's why I want to stay at end on the next level. If I grow more I'll probably move inside, but we'll see."

Josh is in no hurry to make a decision and wants to take all 5 visits when that time rolls around. He'll be looking for a good program and academics, as he feels his time to play will come when it's time.
