Tony Carter came to Florida State a prized cornerback prospect from Jacksonville, FL. The former high school All-American is entering his senior season at Florida State, and after a solid spring decided to head down to work with acclaimed speed coach Tom Shaw. He says the experience has been going well, and that he has learned a lot during his time there.
"I heard a lot of good things about Tom Shaw. People always come back down here to work with him. Last summer I came down here for a couple weeks, so I wanted to come here again for a longer time. The fact that I'm not in summer school allowed me to come here and enjoy the different scenery here. Pretty much I wake up, train and hang out. I am enjoying life without school and I will be here until the first week of June."
"It's going well down here. It's hot but I am at home here. I came down to work with Tom Shaw because I want to get ready for my last year at Florida State and to get ready for the next phase of my life. He is a great trainer. Some of the best guys in the game come down here and work with him. With Tom you see NFL programs, so I feel I am learning the ropes for the next level and I've been learning some stuff on technique. With Tom it is more than just speed, and I have learned a lot of things. I feel I can work hard anywhere, but now that I have a break from school I felt that coming down here I could focus on football and focus on improving my strength."
Tom Shaw has some ties to Florida State, and several former Seminole players work with him to get better at the weak parts of their game. Tony says current assistant strength and conditioning coach Terrell Buckley has worked with Tom, and that he highly recommended it. Also, he says he has enjoyed his time working with current Pittsburgh Steeler Ike Taylor.
"With Tom you work on things like catching the ball, technique and all that. A lot of corners come down here to work with him. Terrell Buckley said he used to come down here all the time and said it would be a good experience. We've been working out and lifting and I have gained some of the weight I lost during spring practice. I also got to work with Ike Taylor. He is really good friends with Tom and he was showing me a lot of stuff. He shows me some drills and ways to get better."
Tony says that going down and working with Tom has been humbling, but he felt that working with all of the top level talent has shown that he has a chance to make it beyond the collegiate level.
"It's been good coming here, and it has been humbling working with all of these guys. It lets me know that I have a lot of work to do, but it also lets me know that I can get there because I have been able to compete with all of these guys. I have a lot of learning to do, that's for sure."
With spring practice out of the way and a bachelor's degree earned last fall, Carter is using this time to focus on FSU and getting himself ready for his senior year if football.
"All of my attention is on working out now. I am looking forward to the future and finishing off my last year at FSU strong. I finished my bachelor's last fall, so mainly it's going to be about football. I will be taking some classes for another major. I am looking towards where my life is going to be in a year or two. I plan on putting all of my heart to my team this year and help get FSU back to where they should be. I haven't had a break from schools since I got to FSU, so now it is really about football."
"I want to make sure I have no regrets. I have really enjoyed my experience at Florida State and I have started every game I have played in. I've been able to work with great coaches and I want to be the next guy who carries on the rich tradition of the FSU corner."
Carter is coming into his last year FSU focused. He wants to be a team leader and really wants to lead the team to a winning season. He says he is using what he has learned throughout his time at FSU to ensure his goals are achieved.
"I have learned a lot from the leaders we have had here at FSU. I want to be a leader not because I am older, but some of us as players need to take this team and lead. I want to be a guy people turn to. We all have high expectations for this year. We need to get things back to where they should be and dominant again. On paper we have the players to get it done, but we've underachieved some. Now the offense has better chemistry and the defense is getting to being dominate again. We are all working to getting there. I am excited about this upcoming season. I cannot believe it has gone this fast, but I am going to give it my all and let God take care of the rest."
