FSU lands Nation's Top Kicker

On Wednesday, the Seminoles added number 12 to the 2009 recruiting class by obtaining a verbal commit from Houston, Texas native Dustin Hopkins. The Clear Lake standout had offers from many top programs such as Notre Dame and Missouri, but on Wednesday evening decided to verbally commit to the team he says he is most comfortable with.

Hopkins it the number 1 rated kicker for the 2009 class and was First Team All-State 5A kicker in Texas last year as a junior. Other offers include schools such as Notre Dame, Missouri and Kansas State to name a few.

Earlier this evening, Hopkins was able to answer a few questions for NoleDigest.com.

NoleDigest: Why commit now?

Dustin Hopkins: "I just went over the schools I was interested in, the schools that were interested in me and decided it was time. I definitely feel most comfortable at Florida State."

ND: Who were you recruited by?

DH: "Coach Coley is the one I talked to the most, he and I keep in constant contact. When I committed, he said he was happy for me and welcomed me to the Seminole family. I felt like they wanted me the most and felt like they really needed me."

ND: When's the next visit down to Tallahassee?

DH: "I can't make it for the Seminole Showcase, but I will definitely be coming down before or after it. Most likely I'll be able to make it down sometime in mid July."

ND: What else do you like about FSU?

DH: I want to pursue broadcasting and they have a good program for that. Also I feel very comfortable with the coaching staff and I feel liek they are going to win a National Championship soon.

ND: Are you going to take any visits to other colleges?

DH: "I don't think so, I'm pretty sold on FSU and I don't think I'll make it to any other schools."

ND: How important are academics?

DH: "Academics are definitely very important to me. I have a solid 4.2 GPA right now and I will definitely continue studying hard. That was actually a part of my decision because I want to go into communications or broadcasting and FSU has one of the top programs for that."

ND: Any chance of an early entry?

DH: "Probably not. I don't really have a playbook to learn so it wouldn't benefit too much. I'm going to enjoy high school while I can and come in over the summer."

ND: Do you exclusively play kicker in high school and what about plans to maybe do both at FSU?

DH: "Who knows? In high school I do a little bit of both but I'll probably just focus on kicking for the next level, maybe be the backup punter once I get to FSU. We'll see.

ND: What's the current height and weight?

DH: "I'm up to 175 pounds and 6'2"

ND: What number do you wear in high school? Plan on at FSU?

DH: "I wear 17 in high school, I don't know what I'm going to wear at FSU since it's retired. I'll keep you posted on that one."

ND: How does your family feel?

DH: My family is happy and really supportive. They didn't try to push me one way or another. They're excited for me for sure.

Look for Hopkins to be here sometime before the Seminole Showcase. He mentioned he wasn't sure, but before the Showcase is the most likely time.
