4-star Smith discusses his current FSU visit

Some of Florida State's top targets for 2009 have made it into town for the 2008 Bobby Bowden Camp. While some are participating, others are there checking out the scenery on unofficial visits. Rodney Smith is one of those prospects. NoleDigest spoke to Smith earlier today to talk about the visit and to see if FSU is still at the top of his list.

Archbishop Carroll's Rodney Smith is one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2009 recruiting class. The 6'5" 201 pound Smith is close to reaching 5-star status on Scout.com as he is rated as the 7th best player at his position this year. This week Smith is in Tallahassee checking out Florida State as the annual Bobby Bowden Camp is underway. Rodney told NoleDigest that so far the visit has been great.

"I like it a lot here," said Smith. "I'm not participating in the camp, but I'm checking out the school and the facilities. I came up here with one of my teammates who is a 2009 offensive lineman. The coaches like him and he's here trying to earn a scholarship. This is my first real visit here and I like the facilities a lot. Later today Coach Fisher is taking me on a tour and then to meet Coach Bowden. I am really excited for that. Florida State is a school that I like a lot. They're in my top 5 for sure. I've gotten a chance to hang out with Coach Fisher, Coach Coley, Coach Amato and Coach Dawsey, as well as some of the alumni that have gone to this school."

The coaches from Florida State, especially offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, have gone after Rodney hard. Smith is a high priority for the coaches and he says the relationship he has built with the staff is great.

"I have a really good relationship with Coach Fisher and Coach Coley. They like me a lot as a player and say they wish I could play for them this year. They want me to commit before Signing Day. FSU is way up there but I want to go see some other schools before a decision is made."

Florida State is in a solid position right now with Smith, but there are several other schools who are vying for his commitment this year. He told NoleDigest that he knows of 3 schools that are locks to make his top 5, and says a host of other schools are under consideration.

"I know Florida State, Tennessee and Auburn are going to end up in my top 5, and that FSU is going to be in the top 2. The other schools I am looking at are Boston College, Rutgers, USF, Florida, Ole Miss, Minnesota, Wake Forest and Purdue. I have something like 30 to 35 offers so I am really happy with the recruiting thing right now. It's cool and exciting."

Rodney's senior season is about to get underway, but before then he's planning on checking out Tennessee before heading back home to prepare for the fall.

"I was going to go to the Showtime camp at FSU but I'll be in Tennessee checking them out. Tennessee is a good school that passes the ball a lot and puts guys into the league so I want to check them out. After that camp I was going to go to Florida but I am not going to have enough time. I have one official set up at Auburn when they play LSU, and before I leave FSU I want to set one up when they play Florida. I've been working hard this summer getting ready for my last year in high school so I am ready to go."

Florida State's receiver board is loaded at the top this year. Rodney is a top target for the coaches, which is saying a lot due to the other players he's in competition with. As long as the coaches continue to show the talented 4-star interest, look for FSU to be a big time player for Smith until the end. Stay tuned to NoleDigest for further updates with Rodney, as well as the rest of the 2009 recruiting class.
