Brandon McGee checks in as the 89th ranked player in Scout.com's latest top 300 players and is rated as the 10th best cornerback prospect for the 2009 recruiting class. McGee has been a heavily recruited prospect and has offers from all over the country. He plans on making his commitment August 11th at a press conference at his school. He told NoleDigest that everything is on track for him to make his decision.
"It's almost 100% that I will make my decision on the 11th," said the talented 4-star prospect. "I've got my list down to Ole Miss, Ohio State, North Carolina, Tennessee, Florida State and Miami. I've been planning on making one more trip to Tennessee and Ole Miss and I'm in the process of doing that now. I'm going to those schools to reassure that I know everything I need to know and to make sure I've seen everything I need to see."
Early in the process Florida State has been a school that McGee has kept an eye on. As his recruitment has progressed it seems like the Noles have fallen behind some of the other programs that Brandon has been looking at. While he hasn't been to FSU in a while he says that isn't going to play a role in his decision.
"I haven't been to FSU in a while," explained McGee. "It's just been the schedule and all but I've been there a lot. I have family there and I love Tallahassee. FSU has always been a top program on my list and it feels like home every time I am up there. The fact I haven't visited in a while doesn't have an affect on them in regards to my decision."
One of Florida State's newest commitments has been working hard trying to get McGee to come to FSU. Lonnie Pryor and Brandon have built a relationship and the talented corner says the FSU commitment is trying to get him to become a Seminole.
"Me and Lonnie talk about 2 or 3 times a week over text or MySpace," said McGee. "He's trying to lure me to FSU. With him making his decision it does play some kind of role because I know him and we've built up a relationship. We usually compare reasons why we're looking at the schools we are and stuff like that. With him going to FSU it'd be nice knowing people who are going there already."
Fans of recruiting have penciled McGee in Miami's class for this year. Whether its proximity or the fact he has visited more than once it has become public knowledge that he's Miami bound. The kicker is that that's news to McGee. In fact, Brandon went further into his recruitment and said that he's pretty much got his mind on 3 schools.
"To be honest, I have never really been high on Miami," said McGee about his rumored favorite. "I've been there a few times and I have a good relationship with the coaches, but I don't understand why people think I am leaning or going there. Miami really has never stood out to me. They are up and coming but I have never been infatuated with them."
"I'm still contemplating my decision," continued McGee, "but I have it narrowed down to 3 schools in my mind. Those three schools are Tennessee, FSU and Ole Miss. Those are the three schools I am most comfortable with and that I can picture myself playing at. It's gonna shock some people that Miami isn't in there but I think my decision may surprise people. Right now I'd say I'm leaning towards one school and that'd be FSU. For some reason people don't talk about them when it comes to my recruitment."
McGee's decision does in fact seem to be a little but of a shock mainly because the general thought from coaches and insiders have felt schools like Ohio State and Miami were leading the pack. McGee has thought long and hard about his list of schools, therefore no one can say he hasn't thought his process through. He told NoleDigest he's focused on getting his announcement done so he can focus on his senior season and start the process of enrolling early.
"I want to get this decision done because it will allow me to focus on my senior year. Once I make this decision I am going to be 100% committed. Also I plan on going of to school in January. Enrolling early is important because I can get an early jump on my career and it'll help me get acclimated to the college atmosphere better. With football it will give me a chance to learn the playbook and it'll give the coaches more of a chance to evaluate me as a player."
It looks like Brandon's recruitment is going to play out much differently than people have thought. While there is still over a week and two unofficials to go before the decision is made official, it looks like at this time the Seminoles are in a solid position to land Brandon McGee come August 11th. Stay tuned to NoleDigest as we track McGee's recruitment and announcement.
