To Redshirt or Not Redshirt (Offense)

The season starts next weekend as the Seminoles will be facing Western Carolina. Over the past few months the freshmen from the 2008 recruiting class have been getting acclimated to the college game as they prepare for the season. NoleDigest takes a look at the class and gives their final prediction on who'll play and who'll redshirt this season.

Florida State signed a top 10 recruiting class last year, and so far many of those players have lived up to their billing. With depth issues across the board for the Seminoles many of the freshmen will be seeing major minutes this fall, while others will redshirt due to them not being ready. NoleDigest looks at each player from the 2008 class and determines if they'll redshirt and provide a reason why.

Offense

QB E.J. Manuel
Bayside High School
Rated- ***** stars
Prediction- Redshirt

Why- Manuel has done well with the time he's gotten, but with 3 guys in front of him who've gotten the majority of the work, there is no need to burn a year while E.J. waits. The spring of 2009 is when Manuel's signing will begin to be felt.

RB Tavares Pressley
El Camino CC
Rated- **** stars
Prediction- Redshirt

Why- Pressley suffered a knee injury during Thursday's practice which turned out to be a torn ACL. He's out for the entire 2008 season.

RB Jermaine Thomas
First Coast High School
Rated- *** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Jermaine has proven to be a natural playmaker since arriving at FSU. Before he missed time due to the transcript issue he was receiving a lot of praise from coaches Jimbo Fisher and Dexter Carter. Thomas has proven in camp he can be a playmaker in this offense.

RB Carlton "Ty" Jones
Middleton High School
Rated- ** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Jones has been not only one of the best freshmen in camp, but overall has been one of the best players for FSU so far. The coaches love his size and speed and feel he is the tough runner the team's been lacking.

WR Corey Surrency
El Camino CC
Rated- ***** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Corey has been better than advertised and has been a top playmaker throughout camp. Everyday he makes a big play, and that is the reason why the coaches brought him in. His size and speed creates mismatches all over the field. Corey may end up the best receiver this year.

WR Jarmon Fortson
Columbus-Carver High School
Rated- **** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Fortson is another freshman that has impressed with his ability to make plays and has gotten reps with the first team. The receiver position is loaded but Jarmon is good enough to contribute as a freshman.

WR Avis Commack
First Coast High School
Rated- **** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- He's got superglue for hands and runs crisp routes for a freshman. He needs to get bigger physically.

OL Zebrie Sanders
Northmont High School
Rated- **** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Sanders has shocked his position coach as he's a lot tougher than he thought. Sanders has earned a lot of praise for his play and battling Antwane Greenlee for the starting right tackle position. Sanders will play major minutes in 2008.

OL Andrew Datko
St. Thomas Aquinas HS
Rated- *** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Datko has gotten reps with the first team offensive line. He has been praised a couple times during camp by his position coach. Datko will play to give some starter a rest or if an unforeseen injury occurs.

OL Joe Tonga
Mount San Antonio CC
Rated- * star
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Tonga has one year of eligibility and he was brought in to play right away. After initially struggling Joe has come around and is locking in his spot as the left tackle.

OL David Spurlock
Riverdale High School
Rated- *** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Much like Datko, Spurlock has gotten reps with the first team and has been praised a few times for his play. He'll be in the rotation this year for the Noles.

OL Rhonne Sanderson
Tampa Plant Senior High School
Rated- 2 stars
Prediction- Redshirt

Why- Sanderson has primarily been working exclusively with the second team offensive line at the guard position.

TE Bo Reliford
Dillard High School
Rated- ** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- He's established himself as the top player at tight end in camp; therefore he'll most likely be the starter against Western Carolina.

TE Ja'Baris Little
Lincoln High School
Rated- *** stars
Prediction- *No Redshirt

Why- See Reliford. Little's earned a lot of praise from his position coach for his athleticism for his size. If cleared he'll contend for the 2nd team spot and play a lot of minutes in 2008.
