To Redshirt or Not Redshirt (Defense)

The season starts next weekend as the Seminoles will be facing Western Carolina. Over the past few months the freshmen from the 2008 recruiting class have been getting acclimated to the college game as they prepare for the season. NoleDigest takes a look at the class and gives their final prediction on who'll play and who'll redshirt this season.

Florida State signed a top 10 recruiting class last year, and so far many of those players have lived up to their billing. With depth issues across the board for the Seminoles many of the freshmen will be seeing major minutes this fall, while others will redshirt due to them not being ready. NoleDigest looks at each player from the 2008 class and determines if they'll redshirt and provide a reason why.

Defense

LB Nigel Bradham
Wakulla High School
Rated- ***** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Bradham enrolled early into Florida State. He's the biggest, strongest linebacker on the team. He's getting more and more comfortable in the defense.

DT Moses McCray
Hillsborough Senior High School
Rated- **** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- McCray will be one of Florida State's starting defensive tackles. Right now the Seminoles do not have a lot of depth at the DT position due to the early game suspensions.

LB Nigel Carr
First Coast High School
Rated- **** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Carr is a very athletic linebacker. He has a great work ethic that has been noticed. Nigel is one of the younger leaders on the team.

SS Nick Moody
Roman Catholic High School
Rated- *** stars
Prediction- Redshirt

Why- Moody has been dealing with a couple of injuries during camp. While he has practiced he has made a couple of plays. He's still learning the defense but he will be a significant contributor in the future.

CB Terrance Parks
Creekside High School
Rated- **** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Parks is the biggest corner on the team. He has everything you look for in a corner. When he is healthy he's shown some serious ability. He still has a lot to learn about the position & the defense but the upside is there.

DE Toshmon Stevens
Crescent High School
Rated- *** stars
Prediction- Redshirt

Why- Toshmon has a great frame that the Strength & Conditioning Coaches can build upon. He has a great first step and runs well for his size. Stevens is all about "upside".

DT Everett Dawkins
James F. Byrnes High School
Rated- *** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Dawkins was originally brought in to play defensive end for the Seminoles. The lack of players at the defensive tackle position led to the move for Dawkins. He's an undersized high energy player that can surprise at that position this season.

DE Markus White
Butler CC
Rated- **** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Markus will contend for one of the starting defensive end positions this season. Either way White will play major minutes in 2008. He's a player that can really apply a lot of pressure on the quarterback.

LB Vincent Williams
Ridge Community High School
Rated- *** stars
Prediction- No Redshirt

Why- Florida State's second team middle linebacker tore his ACL and is out for the entire season. Williams is not afraid to fill a hole that opens up. Effort is not a problem for Williams which is a good thing.

CB A.J. Alexander
Altoona High School
Rated- **** stars
Prediction- Redshirt

Why- Alexander is a fast and quick player that could give the team another good return man. It's possible that he could be one of the return men from opening day. A.J. has shown glimpses during camp that lets you know that he has a bright future at the cornerback position.

FS Ed Imeokparia
Blair Academy Prep School
Rated- ** stars
Prediction- Redshirt

Why- Imeokparia tore his ACL and will miss the entire 2008 season.
