While the level of competition for Florida State the first two weeks has not been strong, the defense has had to go through the first two games missing 5 starters at key positions. Coming into the first 3 games the upperclassmen on the defense have been motivated to play well and help the young players as they adjust to the college game. Junior rover Myron Rolle has been playing extremely well the first 2 games, garnering praise from defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews. In week 1 against Western Carolina Coach Andrews gave Myron a ton of praise.
"Myron Rolle may have played the best game of his college career. He was more aggressive and more into the game than he ever has been before," said Andrews in his weekly press conference last week.
Coach Andrews has always been a notoriously tough grader. He does that because he strives for perfection from his guys. Coming into this past weekend's game the best Rolle had every graded was in the 70's. This week he set the mark.
"This past game I graded out at 86 and earned 30 tomahawk points," said Rolle. "It's the highest grading I have ever had. I graded out better than all of the defensive backs. Also, I was nominated for the hit-stick this week but lost out to the hit by Kenny Ingram."
The vast improvement seen over these past 2 games from Myron is due to his hard work during the off-season. Coach Andrews told Myron that his aggressiveness is what he likes, and the movement he is showing on the field is the best he's seen from the talented safety.
"Coach Andrews liked my aggressiveness and physical play," stated Rolle. "He also said he liked my movement on the field and said that this was my best game ever. He said last week that Western Carolina was my best game ever but this week he said it to me again. Coach Andrews also told me that I am on my way to becoming a dominating player."
Myron told NoleDigest that he's just trying to improve each week and wants to build upon each game's performance. With the nationally televised game this week against Wake Forest, that play is going to have to continue. The level of competition is going to be completely different than what this team has faced, but Rolle says this team is ready for the challenge.
"I'm trying to build on what I've done these first two games," said Rolle, "and I want to improve every week. Wake is a good team and they are very efficient in their passing game. I am extremely excited to play this week and I am ready to go now. We were watching film on them and everyone just got pumped up. We are all ready for this game."
Florida State's success this week will be determined on how the defense plays. If the first two weeks are any indication it looks like Myron and the rest of the defense are up for the challenge. With several schemes and coverages not shown yet, this unit is eager to prove itself this weekend against a team that has beaten them 2 years in a row.
Stay tuned to NoleDigest as we track the team this week as they prepare for their ACC opener against the Demon Deacons.
