Grades & Tomahawks vs. Virginia Tech

The Florida State Seminoles (6-1) defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies (5-3) in Doak Campbell Stadium last evening.

Offense- B-. The offense went up against a stout Virginia Tech defense. Defensive Coordinator Bud Foster did a very good job of blitzing and applying pressure on QB Christian Ponder. With that being said, the offense only managed 248 yards. They had a terrible first half only managing 86 total yards. D'Vontrey Richardson coming in the game was a good change of pace. Antone Smith had a very nice run that was well executed and blocked extremely well. Marcus Sims came into the ball game and played well. Ty Jones was the ultimate team player for giving up a redshirt year for the betterment of the team. WR Greg Carr's two long receptions set up scoring drives for Florida State's offense. Taiwan Easterling made ESPN's list for top plays for his exceptional touchdown catch. The offensive line struggled early in the game but later started blocking much better. The Hokies ran several blitz packages that brought more people than the Seminoles could block. The offense responded well after a tough start and showed their resilience. Florida State also won the time of possession as well.

Defense- A-. The defense played a below average first half giving up 205 yards. The second half they played their best football of the season giving up 2 yards in the third quarter and 36 yards in the fourth quarter. They held Virginia Tech to 248 total yards. The Seminoles defense also had 6 sacks. They also continued their great play on third down conversions holding Va. Tech to 1 for 11.Defensive end Everette Brown had his best game of his career with 3 sacks and 4 tackles for losses. Linebacker Toddrick Verdell was very active and may have had his best game of this year. He also sacked Tyrod Taylor that ended his day on the first play of the game. Derek Nicholson had a perfect strip and recovery on the runningback. The secondary also played a solid game and had some coverage sacks.

Special Teams- C+. Graham Gano came through in the clutch again. He made a 50 yard kick and was 3 for 3 on the day. Nigel Bradham recovered a ball on special teams for a critical turnover. The kick-off and punt coverage were absolutely terrible and were responsible for the excellent field position for the opposition once again.
