FSU Offers So. Florida Standout

Florida State's been evaluating several defensive linemen across the nation recently. One of the latest recruits to receive an offer from the Seminoles comes from the talent-rich South Florida area. NoleDigest caught up with this talented recruit to get his thoughts on the offer and to talk about his recruitment at this time.

Calvin Smith is the latest standout defensive end from Hialeah. While he isn't as popular yet as former Hialeah standouts Adewale Ojomo and Corey Liuget, Smith has all of the tools to be the best of the bunch when it is all said and done, and it is that potential that has his name emerging on the recruiting scene. Calvin told NoleDigest that he has 8 offers at this time, and that he expects the list to grow soon.

"Recruiting has been going well for me so far," said the 6'4" 270 pound defensive tackle. "I have 8 offers from Florida State, Illinois, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Purdue, Minnesota, FIU and Arkansas. Tennessee has been talking to me a lot and I've been to Florida and UCF over the past week. I think they're going to be offering me soon."

FSU offered Smith a little over a week ago. He said the offer was a big one because he's always followed the ‘Noles. While he hasn't gotten the chance to talk to the coaches yet, FSU is rapidly climbing up Smith's list.

"FSU offered me a little over a week ago," Smith said, "and that was a big offer for me because I grew up a fan of them. They're still my favorite so I was happy about the offer. The coaches at FSU called up my head coach and told them they offered me. I haven't spoken to the coaches yet, but they've moved way up my list. They're going to be a school I really look into because I like the coaches. Right now I just like it all."

Some people aren't familiar with Calvin as a player, but he has the tools that colleges are looking for in a defensive tackle. When asked what makes him standout as a player Calvin said it was his versatility.

"I think what makes me standout right now is my height and weight," said Smith. "I can rush the passer from my tackle spot (he had 7 sacks last year) and I can stuff the run. I really like to get after the quarterback. I also play offensive line too, but I want to play defense in college. Now I just need to get stronger."

Smith says that he is in no rush to make a commitment as he has pegged December as the most likely time when he makes his announcement. At this time it seems as though FSU sticks out to Calvin, as he said a good visit there could shake his plans up.

"Right now it is too early to make a decision but I plan on committing around December after I visit some schools," explained Smith. "I don't know who I will visit, but I know I will be visiting FSU soon. I just want to get there and see what it's like in person. If it is great, I will still hold off some on a decision but it'll probably come quicker."

With the commitment of Denzel McCoy to Georgia Tech it is vital that the coaches at FSU continue to evaluate defensive linemen. Calvin is a good start, and if things go to plan Smith may be a Seminole when February rolls around.

Stay tuned to NoleDigest for further updates with Calvin, as well as the rest of the recruits from the 2010 class.
