STA Recruit Talks FSU and Recruiting

Cody Riggs alone is one of the top cover corners in the 2010 class. When you pair him up with the rest of the defensive backs from St. Thomas Aquinas, they form the best defensive backfields this year. NoleDigest caught up with Cody to talk about his recruitment, and to see if any schools stick out at this time.

St. Thomas Aquinas is arguably the most talented team in the nation for 2009 as they'll field a defense that has numerous top flight recruits to go a long with their high powered offense. Cody Riggs is one of STA's best players this year and he is one of the top corners this year in a Florida, which is a statement that says a lot due to the sheer depth at that position this year.

Right now Cody has focused all of his attention to track, but recruiting is starting to pick up for the 5'9 ½" 165 pound corner.

"I'm running track right now and that's what I am focused on," said Riggs. "I'm running the hurdles and long jump this year. Last year I won states in the 300 hurdles, so I am trying to repeat."

"Recruiting has been going pretty well and I have been starting to talk to more coaches lately," continued Riggs. "I'm right around 12 offers or so right now from schools like Florida State, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Wake Forest, Boston College, Ole Miss, Rutgers and Purdue. Schools like Florida and Michigan have been talking to me a lot and want me to come visit them soon."

Cody told NoleDigest that he grew up a fan of Florida State and that he is definitely interested in what the school has to offer. When asked what he liked about the Seminoles, he talked about the style of defense and the coaching staff in the program.

"FSU has always been my favorite school and I am definitely interested in them," said Riggs of his interest in the ‘Noles. "They are one of my top schools and they were one of the first to offer me. I like how they always have a good defense, they always put guys into the NFL, it's a nice campus and I am familiar with the coaches. I've known Coach Buckley for a few years now since the camp I went to there. He is really easy to talk to and I think it'd be good playing for him. The few times I have been to FSU it seems nice. It is a fun environment and I think I could enjoy my college experience there."

The fact that FSU only singed one true corner in 2009 means they need to sign at least 2 in the 2010 class. The depth issues is something that Riggs has noticed and it is something that helps FSU at this time.

"Coach Amato and Coach Buckley have told me about how they need corners and that they'll be losing some players this year," explained Riggs. "There is a chance to go in there and play early, so that is something I am really interested in. I mean they've always been my favorite, and they need corners. That fact helps them."

While Cody isn't the biggest defensive back in the nation, he is very physical and is capable of getting in bigger receivers faces. The footwork he has also allows him to cover the smaller, quicker guys.

"I feel that people underestimate me because I am not the biggest guy around, but that is something I like because when they come at me I either pick off the pass or tip it away," said Riggs. "I like covering the bigger receivers and I like getting in their faces with the bump and run. Down here we play against a lot of teams with bigger players so that is something I am used to."

"When I go to combines I like to play off my man and show my footwork," continued Riggs on what makes him a good player. "Often guys will go there and just be really physical. I like to show that I have great feet and that I am a technically sound player."

Cody says he doesn't plan on making a decision until Signing Day because he wants to take all of his visits and go through the process.

"Right now I am open to everyone and I am going to wait until after spring to really dive in (to recruiting)," stated Riggs. "I want to go through the process and see what is out there. I will always have some top schools but I am open to the schools that offer me. I'll probably make my decision on Signing Day after I make all of my visits."
