Richard Ash has seen his recruitment really pick up steam over the past month. The talented defensive lineman is starting to garner interest from programs coast to coast due to the versatility and athleticism he brings to his position. After a slow start Ash is now in the double-digits when it comes to scholarship offers.
"Recruiting has been going very well so far and it has been getting busier lately," said the Pahokee standout about his recruitment. "I've got offers from Florida State, Florida, Tennessee, FIU, West Virginia, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Purdue, Colorado State and UCF. USC has been talking to me a lot and they are evaluating me at this time. An offer from them would be huge. I'm happy and excited about all of this and I hope that there is more to come."
Ash was in Gainesville this past weekend to check out Florida's spring game. He says the visit was pretty good and that he really liked what he saw.
"I really had a good time on the visit this past weekend to Florida," said Ash. "The fans were great, the atmosphere was surprising for the spring game, and I got along with the staff. Coach Meyer and Coach Gonzalez showed me a good time, and they were talking to me about how they needed (defensive) linemen. I watched them play and I liked their intensity. I'm definitely interested in the Gators."
The 6'4" 260 pound lineman also has a lot of interest in Florida State. In fact FSU was his favorite school growing up. When the offer came through from the Seminoles Ash said he almost got kicked out of class due to the excitement.
"I've always like FSU because of their defense," Ash said, "so when I got offered from them I got so excited I almost got kicked out of class for yelling. I was so excited about it, man. The coaches want me to come in and play defensive tackle for them."
"I was talking to Coach Coley and Coach Haggins about them and they were telling me they want me to come on board early," continued Ash. "Right now I am taking it easy but we got along pretty well. There is a chance to go in there and play early. They told me that they like my size and the burst I have off the line. Right now I would say FSU is in a good spot for me."
Richard isn't in too much of a hurry to make a decision, but he does know what he is looking for and when he'll make his announcement.
"I'm looking at making some unofficial visits here pretty soon and I am open to the process," said Ash. "I want to go to a school where I can play as a freshman and a place that has good academics. Distance won't be a factor for me. I will be making my decision on the 26th in honor of a fallen teammate, so until then I am going to check out some schools and get ready for the season."
