FSU Offers Talented Connecticut Linebacker

The May evaluation period is right around the corner, so look for more offers from Florida State to go out soon. One of the latest to receive an offer is Stamford High standout Khairi Fortt. NoleDigest caught up with his father to get the latest on the FSU offer and to talk about Fortt's recruitment.

Khairi Fortt is one of the most physically gifted linebackers in the 2010 class as Scout.com rates him as the 5th best outside linebacker this year. The 6'3" 229 pound athlete finished his junior season with 118 tackles, four fumbles caused and two interceptions, and he also had six touchdowns rushing on offense. His versatility as a player has led to 27 offers from the nation's top programs.

NoleDigest caught up with his father, Guy Fortt, who is helping Khairi with his recruitment, to talk about the offer from Florida State and to see where he is at with his recruitment. According to Guy, things have picked up as they've been visiting schools all over the Eastern seaboard.

"Right now Khairi is looking for a home so we've been out seeing a bunch of schools," explained Fortt. "We've seen 13 different schools so far so we're going through the process. Getting the offer from FSU was exciting, and it puts him at 27 now."

The offer from the Seminoles came from their recruiting coordinator James Coley. Guy told NoleDigest that while the offer came "late" compared to others, the Seminoles have as good a shot as any. The fact that Coach Coley will be playing a role in Khairi's recruitment may help FSU.

"FSU came in late compared to the other schools because we've been in the process of putting lists together and looking around other places," said Fortt. "That doesn't mean that FSU is out or anything. Coach Coley was the one who offered. Make sure you put this is the update….Coach Coley is cool as hell. He was telling us how interested he is in Khairi and that they need linebackers. Right now we're connecting and we're going to be visiting FSU in June or July when we visit all of the schools in Florida. Academics are important to Khairi so he has been talking to Myron Rolle a lot lately. He had such a great academic year, so he thinks he can follow in that same path."

The younger Fortt didn't grow up a fan of any certain school so any school that offers will be getting a fair shake in terms of being evaluated. The visits have helped Fortt so far, and he has more visits lined up down the road.

"Khairi has visited Penn State, Notre Dame, UConn, Rutgers, Maryland, and a bunch of others," said Guy. "The Penn State visit was good and he's heading back there for their spring game this weekend. We've been traveling around a ton so he can find the best fit for him as a player. Academics, the alumni base in terms of him being able to network with former players, and the synergy between the students and the football players are important."

When asked what makes Khairi stand out Guy wasn't shy in explaining that Fortt is a vastly talented linebacker who can fill a whole with power, and at the same time show the speed to chase people down.

"Khairi has long arms like a gorilla and he can get sideline to sideline," stated Guy. "He is quick, has speed, has tenacity and just has the ability to grab people and sling them to the ground. He really is nasty. He will hit you hard in the hole as a "Mike" and he will chase you down and hit you like you just hit his mother (laughs). He can tear people up."

NoleDigest will try later to get up with Khairi to get his thoughts on the offer as he wasn't available when this update happened. Fortt is talented, so look for the ‘Noles to turn up the heat for this talented linebacker over the next few weeks.

Stay tuned to NoleDigest for further updates with Fortt, as well as the rest of the 2010 recruiting class.
