Meet the freshman class: Dustin Hopkins

As Florida State's freshman class arrives in Tallahassee in the coming weeks, NoleDigest will profile each athlete telling fans what to expect from every player.

Name: Dustin Hopkins
Position: Kicker

Why he chose Florida State:Hopkins chose FSU for a few reasons. Of all the schools he was considering, Hopkins said he felt most comfortable in Tallahassee once he had visited FSU. Academics also played a big role for Hopkins who carries a 4.2 GPA in high school. Hopkins is interested in majoring in broadcasting and says Florida State's communications department really caught his eye.

Hopkins chose FSU over Notre Dame, Missouri and Kansas State.

Strengths: Hopkins is the has an excellent leg for kick-offs and field goals. According to kicking coach Chris Sailer, Dustin has everything it takes to be a D1A kicker. He is strong, consistent, and mentally tough. Impressive on both field goals and kickoffs and has also showed the ability to punt. Hopkins is rated the number one kicker in the nation.

Weaknesses: Although he punted a little in high school, he will have to work on that area of his game in order to do it at Florida State. The Tribe didn't recruit him to punt so that is not a very big issue. Hopkins was brought in to replace Graham Gano's field goal kicking ability and that will be his number one priority.

Chance of redshirting: 0% Hopkins will likely come in and start as Florida State's place kicker from day 1. During the spring, the 'Noles lacked consistency at the position and no one on the current roster has a leg that can match that of Hopkins'.

Notes about Hopkins: Hopkins also plays soccer in high school, but due to his commitment to FSU decided to take his senior year off while he has all focus set to FSU. "I didn't play soccer this year because I didn't want to risk injury," Hopkins said. "I did run track. The hurddles actually helped keep my flexors loose. I've been kicking 3 times a week and lifting."

On when he will be in Tallahassee: "We leave Texas on the 18th and everything starts the 20th. I have nerviuso excitment going on because I have been looking forward to this for a while. I can't wait for that first kickoff against Miami."
