ND Post Spring Recruiting Board: Cornerback

Over the next few weeks NoleDigest will be looking at the Post-Spring Recruiting board for Florida State. After scouring the country checking out recruits, the coaches at FSU have seen their board change as interest has grown in some, while others have either committed or slipped down the list. In this installment we look at the cornerbacks FSU is targeting.

When one looks at the needs for Florida State for the 2010 class cornerback stands out like a sore thumb. After signing one corner last year the coaches are looking to sign 3 for this class. The position is deep this year so FSU has a whole bunch of recruits to choose from.

1) Lamarcus Joyner: Heading into the 2010 recruiting season this was possibly FSU's top target on the defensive side. After spring nothing really changed that even though Joyner spent most of his time on the offensive side of the ball. FSU is in a heated battle with Ohio State for Joyner, and many Buckeye fans feel they have this one in the bag. The coaches need to land this kid, and they are making sure things end up that way.

2) Terrence Mitchell: Mitchell showed over the spring that he is one of the most athletic corners in the nation as he participated in both football and track. His run to states took some time away from football, but Mitchell showed several coaches that he is a top target in the state this year. FSU has led throughout and nothing has changed in that regard.

3) Merril Noel: Here is the thing on Noel: some feel FSU doesn't want him, but the coach who is recruiting him wants the Pahokee product very badly. Noel goes up against top-flight competition every day, and he often more than holds his own. Noel reports a Florida offer, but there is talk that may not be the case. As part of a package deal there is no telling where his recruitment will go after delaying his decision earlier this month.

4) Cody Riggs: Riggs had a good spring. What he lacks in size he more than makes up for in pure cover skills. He can play man-to-man and he can play zone. Riggs has been rumored to be a heavy Notre Dame lead, but that is not the case anymore as other schools like Florida have offered. FSU is in it but they're trailing some other schools.

5) Keion Payne: Payne just got the offer he has been waiting for as FSU offered him recently. Payne has excellent size, and he is the biggest corner on this board. After watching him in spring and reviewing newer film Coach Coley extended the offer. The tradition FSU has will be tough for other schools to beat.

Other targets: Tony Grimes (Grimes is dying for an offer. Over the spring his recruitment blew up, and now he is rated as Scout.com's 5th best corner. There is concern about his speed amongst the coaches at FSU), Terrence Brooks (right now more of an athlete than corner), Jeremi Wilkes (he reports an FSU offer), Gareef Glashen (on the radar, and he will be attending camp) and Rashad Knight (the coaches want a better look at him at camp).
