Is PA QB Favoring FSU?

With Florida State looking to sing a quarterback this recruiting cycle Coach Fisher has been out and about looking for players he feels fit his style. One of the recruits targeted early in the process was Bethlehem, PA standout Anthony Gonzalez. NoleDigest caught up with the Liberty High signal caller to get the details on his recruitment and to see if the Noles have a shot at him.

Fans of Florida State are now familiar with most of the names the coaches are targeting this year, but there are several other recruits out there that haven't been talked about much as we head into the summer. One of those recruits is Anthony Gonzalez, the 3-star quarterback from Pennsylvania. Gonzalez is a standout dual-threat quarterback and he is one of the best players in Pennsylvania this year.

As a junior Anthony led Liberty to a PIAA Class AAAA state championship, and he was named the Associated Press Class AAAA Player of the Year. He also earned All-State honors as he completed 114 of 206 passes for 1,580 yards and 12 touchdowns against just five interceptions and ran 264 times for 1,697 yards and 24 TDs. His ability as a playmaker has over a dozen colleges interested, and he told NoleDigest several schools came by to see him over the spring.

"I have 13 offers right now from schools like Florida State, Pitt, Oregon, West Virginia, Illinois, UCONN, Penn State, Clemson, Stanford and some others," said Gonzalez. "While we don't have a spring game or wear equipment the spring went well as several coaches came by the school to watch me throw for them. I've been talking to Purdue some and others, too, but since they can't really call right now it has been quiet lately."

Anthony says that FSU offered him back in February. Since then the Seminoles have been a school he's been interested in mainly due to Jimbo Fisher and his reputation as a quarterback coach. Gonzalez says that he and Coach Fisher have stayed in contact and that he's in the process of lining up a visit.

"I've been interested in FSU since they offered me back in February," stated the 6'2" 205 pound signal caller. "I've been talking to Coach Fisher about heading down there to check them out. Pretty much we just have to set a date. He came to see me in late May to watch me throw, and we've stayed in contact throughout. He told me how he likes how I can run and pass the ball well and that I am one of the better quarterbacks in the nation this year. He has put 12 quarterbacks into the NFL. That shows how he is a great coach and that he can develop his guys. It's important knowing that he is going to be the next head coach there."

It's early and there are other programs that will probably offer Gonzalez, but he told NoleDigest that he has a top 3-5 schools. He explained what he likes about each.

1) FSU: "I have to be honest and say that right now I really like FSU. They are probably my first choice right now. They have great tradition. I just need to get down there to check it out."

2) Pitt: "I've been to Pitt a lot and they are very interested in me. I kind of want to get away, but we'll see what happens."

3) Oregon: "I like their spread offense and my coach knows Chip Kelly well."

4) Illinois: "I like their offense."

5) Clemson: "I don't know too much about them but I heard the area there is beautiful."

Right now Anthony says he doesn't have any set plans for visits. He's been to Penn State, Pitt and Maryland so far and now he wants to get out comparing what the different schools have to offer him as a player.

"I don't have plans that are set in stone, but I've already been to Penn State, Pitt and Maryland for visits," said Gonzalez. "I want to check out these other schools to see what they are like and to see where I am most comfortable at. The place I fit best at is where I will go."

Fans of FSU can count of the ‘Noles being apart of Anthony's recruitment throughout his entire process.

"Even though I will be checking out these other schools FSU will always be there on my list," stated Gonzalez. "They are on the rise, they're a young team and they are going to make it back soon."

Stay tuned to NoleDigest for further updates with Anthony, as well as the rest of the recruits from the 2010 recruiting class.
