The search is over: Stoops to FSU

Friday night, word broke that Florida State will hire Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops to replace the retiring Mickey Andrews. Stoops is the second assistant hired by Jimbo Fisher since the announcement that he will take over as head coach following Florida State's bowl game.

Friday night, NoleDigest confirmed with sources close to Florida State's athletics department that Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops will leave Tuscon for Tallahassee.

Stoops reportedly interviewed with soon-to-be head coach Jimbo Fisher in Tallahassee this past Sunday night. The interview clearly went very well as Stoops is now set to replace longtime defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews who has coached at Florida State for 26 seasons.

Stoops most notable coaching jobs came at the University of Miami where he coached the defensive backs from 2001-2003. In 2004, Mark's brother, Mike, was hired as the head coach at the University of Arizona. Mark followed his brother and took over as the defensive coordinator for the Wildcats.

This past season, Arizona finished second in the Pac-10 in total defense (315 ypg) and fourth in scoring defense (23.2 ppg). Stoops rushing defense also ranked second in the conference giving up just 111 yards per game on the ground.

Stoops joins former Tennessee running backs coach Eddie Gran as Jimbo Fisher's first two hires since it was announced that he will take over as head coach next season.

Gran and Stopps will replace Dexter Carter and Mickey Andrews on the coaching staff while Florida State will still be look to replace Jody Allen, Chuck Amato and Todd Stroud; all coaches who will not be retained following the Gator Bowl. Offensive line coach Rick Trickett interviewed Friday for the head coaching job at Marshall and may also need to be replaced. Nothing is certain on Trickett yet.

The hire of Stoops will make for a very interesting story line next season when Florida State heads to Norman to play Oklahoma who is headed by Mark's other brother, Bob Stoops.
