Derrick Mitchell's recruitment is sure to pick up after excelling at the UnderArmour combine in Jacksonville earlier this month. While his offer list is small but distinguished, more schools will be coming after him once the spring evaluation process gets under way.
Mitchell attended Florida State's first Junior Day of 2010 Saturday as he's in the process of making some visits before spring ball starts. Mitchell grew up surrounded by Seminoles as his father attended the school as a basketball player. Some have thought that gives the ‘Noles the advantage coming into the process. While Derrick has remained open the visit made a huge impression on him this weekend, especially spending time with Coach Haggins.
"The visit was great," said the talented defensive tackle. "It's a beautiful campus. Beautiful people. Great coaching staff. Coach Odell Haggins has recruited me real hard. He's a great man. He grew up with my father. Actually went here with my father; they're great friends. So we know his background. He's a realist. He'll tell you how it is. Great coach. He sends a lot of defensive tackles to the league. He's a former NFL player. All-American when he was here at Florida State. So, he's really a great man. The campus is great. It kind of feels like home. So, I'll check a few others out and then I'll make my decision."
Mitchell says that he's felt good about FSU throughout the process so far, but his parents are especially excited about the possibility of him becoming a ‘Nole.
"Well my Dad thinks this is the right place for me already," Mitchell said, "and my mom loves it too. She loves the academic background and everything."
Derrick says he is very close to making a decision, but before he does that he wants to make a few more visits to see what other schools have to offer.
"We'll check Clemson out, Georgia Tech's good, Alabama-they're up there, and there is the possibility of visiting South Carolina," Mitchell said of the schools he'll visit. "But I will be deciding in the near future…Near future for sure. Maybe a few weeks. Maybe a month. I want to check out some other places and then its decision time."
