Gold Wins Spring Game

A little over 51,000 enjoyed an exciting Spring game which saw the Gold beat the Garnet 29-17. Bert Reed caught 10 balls for 163 yards and a TD(in a losing effort) as the offenses combined for over 640 yards. The defense had plenty of great moments, particularly on third down where they had stops 17 out of 25 times.

The Gold received touchdowns from Chris Thompson(7 yard run), Jarmon Fortson(5 yards from Christian Ponder), Ponder(3 yard run), and Rodney Smith(14 yards from Ponder). Defensive End Brandon Jenkins chipped in a safety to round out the scoring.

The Gold was able to run the ball for over 100 yards and more than four yards a carry, Debrale Smiley led with 58 yards on just three carries(a beautiful 48 yard run was a big chunk). However, this offense went to the air 35 times and ran it just 21. There was a lot of talk pre-game about Ponder being the top QB in the country, he did nothing to dispel that notion Saturday afternoon. A very solid performance from him, particularly considering he was not even expected to be healthy.

Thompson and Jermaine Thomas have a little more juice than the others RBs, each had a run of 20 yards. Smith led the WRs with three catches for 124 yards including a 69 yard gain where he got behind the defense. Fortson also caught three passes while Timothy Orange added four.

Brandon Jenkins had a dominant performance registering six tackles and three sacks, he was one of the players we singled out pre-game and he delivered. The LB trio of Vince Williams, Nigel Carr, and Jeff Luc combined for 16 tackles and a sack, a large part of their success on the afternoon.

The Garnet team was only slightly more balanced with 33 passes and 22 runs. QB Will Secord was consistent all afternoon completing 12 of 23 passes for 115 yards. He did almost all his work underneath while showing a good grasp of the offense. Clint Trickett started slowly, but came on late with some big plays, he finished 4 of nine for 95 yards. Trickett's big hook up went to Bert Reed on a stop and go that went for 70 yards(and a TD). He looked much more comfortable in the second half and showed some athleticism with his feet.

Tavares Pressley broke off a 35 yard run, that was most of his 40 total on three carries. Ty Jones scored on a two yard run and ended with 24 yards on four carries. Willie Haulstead had three catches for 26 yards.

Defensive back Xavier Rhodes led with six tackles and Linebacker Nigel Bradham chipped in five for the Garnet defense. Safety Nick Moody and Defensive Tackle Anthony McCloud also had their moments.

It appeared to be a relatively injury free afternoon(a huge plus) and really puts a cap on an excellent Spring.
