QBs Throw for Over 500 Yards

Florida State QBs combined for over 500 yards passing on Saturday, Christian Ponder led the way with 266 yards and two touchdowns.

The talk pre-game was about just how good Christian Ponder is. Is he the top QB in the country? The general consensus seemed to be that he very well may be the top signal caller and there is great anticipation to watch him perform in his 'money year'. Ponder's performance was all the better since he rebounded very quickly from a shoulder injury. Easing his way back into form, he showed some real touch on Saturday afternoon with several passes placed perfectly in rhythm. He was not perfect, but all signs are a go that he is poised for a big senior year. There is not a position on the field that is in better shape for 2010 than QB.

Secord reads the defense

Will Secord had a solid afternoon going 12 for 23 for 115 yards. He mainly worked underneath on the shorter patterns, but threw on time and accurately, in general showing a good grasp of the offense. Secord showed enough to secure the #3 role and allow Clint Trickett to redshirt. Trickett struggled early, but got better as the game progressed and was looking comfortable by the end of the game. He showed more athleticism than he has been given credit for, he just needs to work on adding weight and getting stronger. He does possess a live arm and made several solid throws on the move. Barring injury, neither Trickett or Secord should see major minutes in 2010, however next Spring both should be competing for the starting job with E.J. Manuel.

Manuel was missing from Spring after a compound dislocation of his right index finger. While not a major injury, it was to his throwing hand, thus extra precautions will be used. Manuel remains the QB of the future, it is expected that he will return sometime during the summer. The redshirt sophomore filed in for an injured Ponder down the stretch last season completing 65% of his passes for 817 yards.

NoleDigest Take

Florida State clearly has the best QB situation in the state. Ponder is the most proven commodity and Manuel is the top backup. If Brantley or Harris go down, neither UF or Miami have anyone to turn to with game experience. Ponder is worthy of the pre-season accolades and the more he lives up to the lofty expectations being set, the better this team will be. He will face a big test at Oklahoma in week two. Trickett and Secord are young arms that will have time to develop.
