Florida State extended their scoreless inning streak to 24 as the Noles shutout Charleston Southern 9-0 on Friday afternoon in front of 1,826 fans. Matt Lynch (4-0) had a great outing and picked up his fourth win of the season while Aaron Cheesman and Matt Sauls both had multi-hit games.
Lynch, who had struggled in his previous two starts, was nearly untouchable, allowing only three hits in 6.0 innings of work while walking one and striking out five batters. With the win, Lynch moved up to a tie for ninth place in ACC history for all-time career victories. Eddie Cannon, Rhett James, and Daniel Hodges each pitched an inning without allowing a run.
FSU got things rolling in the third inning when Cheesman reached on an infield single and Sauls doubled to right-center. Stephen Drew then brought home Cheesman with a sacrifice fly, and Tony McQuade walked before Eddie Martinez-Esteve singled to centerfield to score Sauls. Tony Richie then hit a sacrifice fly that score McQuade and gave the Noles a 3-0 lead.
An inning later, Chris Hart walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a fly ball by Derrick Smith, and scored on another single by Cheesman. The Seminoles picked up another run in the bottom of the fifth frame when Martinez-Esteve struck-out swinging but reached first on the wild pitch, moved to second when Richie drew a walk, stole third, and scored on a groundout by Jerrod Brown.
In the eighth inning, Daniel Wardell led off with a single, Cheesman singled for the third time, and Sauls walked to load the bases with no outs. Drew then tripled down the rightfield line to score all three baserunners. McQuade then brought home drew for the final run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left.
Florida State improved to 12-1 on the season as has now won nine games in a row, while Charleston Southern fell to 3-7. Game two of the series is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 with Trent Peterson (2-0 1.56) on the mound for the Noles.
