First Coast Standout Gaining Early Interest

Chris Black is one of the top players in Florida for 2012. While his recruitment is just getting under way the First Coast standout says a few select schools have been showing him the most attention early in the process.

The Jacksonville area has been a hot spot for elite high school players for years and it looks like that trend will not stop for some time. 2012 features several high profile players, one of them being First Coast wide receiver Chris Black. The 5'11" 170 pound playmaker has several verbal offers at this time, and he expects the interest to really pick up once September rolls around.

"I have verbal offers from Florida State, Clemson, South Carolina and Georgia, and Florida is showing me some interest right now," said Black. "Those are the 5 that are showing me the most interest right now. I am looking forward to when these offers become written because I think a lot more schools are going to show me interest. I get a ton of questionnaires in the mail and stuff like that."

Chris says he grew up a fan of the Gators, but 2 schools are standing out to him at this time.

"I would say FSU and Clemson are neck and neck at this time," explained Black. "Clemson is the same as FSU; they have nice facilities, the camp was nice and I like the coaches. They are pretty cool. With FSU there is a little bit of a pipeline from here. That plays a little bit of a role because I know so many people there. I am close to Jermaine (Thomas). We've been friends since elementary school. He's been talking to me about the process and about how I need to keep my head straight."

It's been several months since Black visited FSU. He says a group from First Coast plan to visit FSU later this month for the second session of the Jimbo Fisher Camp.

"I went to Junior Day with Eric (Beverly) and Derrick (Mitchell) back in February," explained Black. "That was a good visit. I am going to camp and their next 7-on-7 later this month. Coach Dawsey can't call me but I call him a lot. I told him I want to come and participate and hang out with some of the people that are going there. I have a great relationship with Coach Dawsey. He has been recruiting me since I was in the 9th grade."

Black is a talented athlete that could possibly excel on either side of the ball, but at this time it seems like he wants the ball in his hands in college.

"I can play all over the field, but I like playing wide receiver," said Black. "I have a lot of versatility. I have good speed and I get in and out of my cuts pretty good. I am a good deep threat and I run good routes. I just want to keep working hard. I also wouldn't mind returning kicks; that is something I am good at too."

Look for Black to take his time with his decision.

"I am going to wait and see how things play out," said Black. "I don't want to be too far away from home, and I want to go somewhere I can play early."

Chris recently stood out at the Auburn camp when he was clocked at 4.43 in the 40 yard dash.
