NoleDigest Take: Game One Defense

Florida State opened the 2010 season with 59-6 win at home over Samford. NoleDigest was on hand and here is a look at how some of the defensive players faired on Saturday.

There was not a more impressive player on defense to us than Bjorn Werner, particularly considering he is a true freshmen. He is much more explosive than we expected and he has legit size right now. His future is extremely bright.

Jacobbi McDaniel made some plays inside, he looks like he is ready to become a force this season. The DTs, in general, were very active and filled up the stat sheet with tackles.

Dan Hicks is not just depth, he is going to be a player, perhaps sooner rather than later.

Marcus White's personal foul led to the first field goal, we expect better from a senior. He needs to step it up as he has a world of talent.

Cameron Erving and Darious Cummings played in the 4th and both immediately made plays....a good sign indeed.

Kendall Smith made some good stops early. Mister Alexander. Wow. It is there for him to have a big year, he is an explosive athlete. Nigel Bradham was active and made some quality plays, but we felt he was pressing just a little. Bradham needs to let the game to him. We are being hard on him because he IS that good.

Telvin Smith is just the type of player that this program needs right now. He has what appears to be terrific speed and plays the game with some swagger. Christian Jones and Jeff Luc both made some plays as well, clearly the future is both secure and very bright.

It appears we like Vincent Williams enough in the middle to get Luc some plays at OLB. Interesting and something that is worth watching as we move forward with the season.

The first thing that you notice is that CBs will play both sides of the field and the substitutions were fairly liberal. Greg Reid of course had the big punt return......he split those defenders right in front of was shockingly good. Big, big, big time player.

There are not going to be any WRs that have a size advantage on Xavier Rhodes. He is physical at the line of scrimmage has the hips and athleticism to cover. Mike Harris looks to have secured the nickel role and he logged an interception. Lamarcus Joyner received a lot of playing time and tattooed a kid in the 4th quarter.

Terrance Parks and Ochuko Jenije were the main safeties (in real time). Parks looks the part out of there, we would like to see him assert himself a little more. Jenije had good game in his first start at Safety. Nick Moody did not dress(injury).

Depth is a concern at Safety as Justin Bright needs to add some strength.

92- Anthony McCloud: 6

13- Nigel Bradham: 6

11- Vince Willaims: 5

5- Greg Reid: 4

99- Jacobbi McDaniel: 4

1- Mike Harris: 4

93- Everett Dawkins: 4

97- Demonte McAllister: 1.5

95- Bjoern Werner: 1

7- Christian Jones: 1

49- Brandon Jenkins: .5

Yes it was against Samford, but the defense is obviously improved from a year ago. How much better? That remains to be seen, but this unit should at least be in the top half of the ACC. There is not a lot of depth here, the good news with that is the youngsters will get some good "run" and that will only help in the future.
