Scouting Georgia Defense and Special Teams

Defensively, Georgia is good, but not as good as the last three opponents that Florida has faced. They give up 99 on the ground and 208 through the air but just gave up 31 points and 423 yards to Kentucky. Like most Florida opponents this year it's a team Florida needs to throw the ball against.

The defensive line is solid but unspectacular. They play a 3-4 scheme and like most teams that use it they ask the defensive line to hold its ground and they do that part pretty well. Nose gurd DeAngelo Tyson and defensive end Abry Jones and Demarcus Dobbs combine for four tackles a game which is a pretty small number, but they aren't asked to make plays. The most important thing about this trip is that they don't get pushed around.

I like the linebacker corps and it's the strength of the defense. Inside linebacker Akeem Dent is having an All-SEC season with 77 tackles and 2.5 sacks. He leads Georgia in tackles and is second in sacks. He's just a really good player. Then you have to notice outside linebacker Justin Houston who has 40 tackles, 14.5 for loss and NINE sacks. Houston is arguably the best edge rusher in the SEC. You have to put a hat on him. The other outside linebacker Marcus Dowtin has 29 tackles including 1.5 sacks.

The secondary is just okay. Strong safety Baccardi Rambo is on the All-American "name" team and is second on the team with 48 tackles. Cornerback No. 19 Sanders Commings has three of their eight interceptions and is probably the best of their corners.

This is a solid defense but not a great one. Of course lately it hasn't taken a great defense to stop Florida.

Scouting Georgia special teams ----

Georgia is as good as anyone in the country with placekicker Blair Walsh (14-17 FG, long 52) and punter Drew Butler (45.5). Both have strong legs and are very consistent. As a team Georgia covers kicks well and returns them well. Leading the way in punt returns was Branden Smith (15.2) who is a very good, consistent return man. However Smith has missed two games with a concussion and is questionable for the Florida game. Wide receiver Logan Gray (6.5) will handle it if Smith does not return. Brandon Boykin (28.8) is as dangerous a kickoff return man as there is and he has a touchdown this year. They have not allowed a punt return of more than 13 yards or a kickoff return longer than 46. They have not blocked a kick this year, nor have they allowed one to be blocked.

The Gators and Dawgs have played three common opponents with virtually identical results. Both teams beat Tennessee and Kentucky and lost to Mississippi State. Florida's average score in those games was 29-14. Georgia's average score was 32-23.
