College Football Musings – Week 10

It was déjà vu' all over again for the Florida State Seminoles while the SEC East continues to get abused by their Western counterparts. It just keeps getting worse in Texas, while Illinoize found a way to score 60-plus points and still lose. Cameron Newton tosses aside the rumors and allegations to put up more great numbers. Those are the highlights for this week's musings.

Longhorns' misery grows ---- The Texas Longhorns season is now a full blown disaster. Texas was humiliated by Kansas State 39-14 to lose its fifth game in six outings. The Wildcats actually led this game 39-0 after three quarters. Texas falls to 4-5 overall and dead last 2-4 in the Big 12 South. The ‘Horns will have to upset Oklahoma State or beat Texas A&M just to be bowl eligible. And that's assuming they get a win over Florida Atlantic.

Wide right AGAIN? ---- It looked like FSU would survive a tough game with North Carolina before usually reliable kicker Dustin Hopkins pushed a 40-yarder wide right to give the Tar Heels a 37-35 win. It was Hopkins' second miss in the final period after making 10-of-12 to that point. Tim Brando's pre-season surprise to reach the BCS Championship Game is now in need of help to reach the ACC Championship Game. FSU gave up 439 passing yards in the contest.

Arkansas adds insult ---- The Arkansas Razorbacks put a 41-20 knot on the head of Steve Spurrier and the South Carolina Gamecocks, but that shouldn't be surprising. The SEC West has completely dominated the East this year in a way we're rarely seen. The Arkansas win makes the West 14-2 against the East this year with two games to play.

Gad-Zooks ---- Former Florida coach Ron Zook was on the verge of a bowl clinching win for Illinoize but it was not to be. Despite taking a lead in the fourth quarter, taking a lead in the second overtime AND scoring 65 points the Michigan Wolverines still beat Illinoize 67-65. Zook's team is still in good shape for post-season play. They are 5-4 with Minnesota (1-9) coming up next week at home. They better get that one because Zook's boys have a tough road game with Northwestern (6-3) and Fresno State (6-2) on the road to finish up the regular season. There are those who would like to see a Florida/Illinoize bowl matchup, but that doesn't seem too likely. Now, if Illinoize wins and Florida loses this weekend……..

Newton's Law ---- An unconfirmed second hand rumor about an agent runner and financial considerations turned Cameron Newton's storybook season into a Reggie Bush redux this week. Aside from the unfairness of mediots who have already banned him from their Heisman ballot there has been nothing whatsoever to tie this character with the Newton family. Newton shrugged it off and led Auburn to a 62-24 win over Chattanooga to improve the Tigers to 10-0 on the season. The one-time Gator passed for 317 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score as he added to an already Heisman worthy resume. It'll be interesting to see how the voters react if Newton leads Auburn past Georgia and Alabama and into the SEC Championship Game.

Down to Four ---- TCU blasted Utah to reduce the number of major college teams with perfect records to four. The Horned Frogs and Boise State are creating quite a debate as to which one should get the spot in the BCS title game should Auburn or Oregon stumble and fall down the stretch. It's hard to argue against either one of them. Boise State has reasonably competitive games to play against Nevada and Fresno St. while TCU has to face a 7-2 San Diego St. squad. As for a one-loss team from a power conference LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, Ohio State and Wisconsin all hope to impress.
