Gator Win Keeps Several Streaks Alive

Granted Florida's 48-14 win over Appalachian State on Saturday did little to make up for the loss to South Carolina the week before, but it did serve several purposes for Urban Meyer's football team. The Gators needed to have something positive happen heading into the season finale with Florida State and they needed to send their seniors out with a win in their final home game.

They accomplished both of those goals.

But the win over the overmatched Mountaineers also served to preserve or extend a number of rather significant streaks for the Florida program. Some of these streaks extend through multiple decades and coaches and serve to demonstrate the quality and consistency of the Florida program over the years.

23rd straight 7-plus win seasons --- The win over Appalachian State improved Florida's record to 7-4 and marked the 23rd consecutive season in which Florida has won at least seven games. The streak began with the 1988 team that finished 7-5 with a win over Illinois in the now defunct All-American Bowl. Florida also won seven games in 1989 and 2004. In this stretch the Gators have won 8 games (3x), 9 games (5x), 10 games (6x), 11 games (1x), 12 games (2x) and 13 games (3x).

31st straight season without a losing record --- Long time Gators remember the dreadful 1979 season when the Gators went 0-10-1. Florida has not had a season with a losing record since. They came awfully close in 1986 (6-5) and 1987 (6-6) when the roster was decimated by NCAA sanctions but won enough to stay at .500 or better. The Gators will end this season no worse than 7-6.

20 straight bowl bids --- The Gators were not allowed to go to a bowl game in 1990 despite a 9-2 record, but they have been bowling every year since. This Gator team became Bowl eligible when it beat Vanderbilt, but it was possible (though highly unlikely) that they could be passed up for post-season play if they finished 6-6. It is no longer possible for the Gators to be kept home for the holidays. It still remains to be determined which game the Gators will play in.

Florida has two streaks on the line next week when they face Florida State up in Tallahassee. The Gators have won six straight against the Seminoles and Urban Meyer has not lost five games in any of his 10 seasons as a head coach. The Gators need a win this week to keep the first streak alive and have to also win their Bowl game to avoid a fifth loss this season.
